I was wondering if its possible to transfer between different schools (not into comp sci, I know thats hard) at CMU. Im worried about eventually wanting to change my major, right now im thinking of applying to IS.

I'm not a student but I believe it is possible depending on how many openings are available.

The IS program is top notch at CMU and not as difficult workwise as CS. As far as transfering into CS...you could major in IS and pick up CS as a second major (my son did that). But you have to plan fairly early, for instance take the more difficult math and programming prerequisite courses for CS that will also satisfy IS requirements.

Internal transfers are possible for all programs. Obviously the more competitive programs (CS, drama, etc.) are extremely tough to transfer into, especially if changing colleges, but if you have the stats to do it, you should be able to.

The real question you need to ask, though, is whether or not you'll be happy as an IS major if you don't get into the other program. If so, then go ahead and apply and see what happens. If not, maybe you should think about applying to a school that allows for transfers more easily (Can't think of any off the top of my head... I'm an SDS major anyway, so I don't know much about tech/comp schools).
