Transfering- "Faking out" your community college

OK long story short- I need 2 years at community college to gather my pre reqs for the 4 years school im planning on transferring to. However, my school wants me to do a Biology AS program. I do not want to be bound to the gen. ed requirements (Bulls*** courses like gym and unnecessary electives) and rather only take the classes that I NEED for my Bachelors degree at the 4 year school. I heard that if you are non-degree seeking, you dont qualify for financial aid. Is there any way you can save all the Bulls*** courses for sophomore spring semester and transfer before you even get the chance? Or will the advisor try to coerce you into doing otherwise?

Will the school that you are transferring to require the Biology AS for transfer? If so, then you are out of luck. However, it has been my experience that many science programs just want to see some kind of Associate degree and all of the in-discipline courses that their own students would have taken by the end of their Sophomore year. Find out if you have to have the Biology AS degree or not. There are lots of other degrees that might get you where you need to go faster.

However, what makes you think that the school that you are transferring to won’t require a similar set of graduation distribution courses (you know, the ones that you so artfully dismissed as “Bulls*** courses”)? You should check to see the graduation distribution requirements for the 4-year degree that you intend to pursue. Maybe ‘Gym’ isn’t on there, but I bet that most of those ‘unnecessary electives’ are. And you know, community colleges cover the same s*** as 4-year colleges in their Bulls*** courses, but for a lot less money.

Agree with Alf. Most CC AS programs are designed to mirror what you would be taking at a four-year school for that major. So sorry, you will have to deal with the “bulls***” courses. And don’t be so quick to dismiss them. I went to college as a science major, took a poli sci class for my general education requirements, and changed my whole life plan after that.
