Transfering Freshman year (to start in the fall) and no having a major

Does it hurt you not to put down a major on your transfer app? I want to go to grad school for business and I'm applying to Penn, but not for Wharton! I'd PROBABLY do economics at Penn should I make it, but it may change. The thing is though, if I put down 'economics,' then:

they'll expect a fantastic grade, and I might get an A-

they'll expect a recommendation, and my Macroeconomics class has 600 people in it
(and my TA is the most impersonal person in the world and a total ****, unlike most other TAs I have)

I read somewhere that Econ is either the most popular major at Penn CAS or one of the most common ones. They have plenty of econ majors, so I'd really have to stand out

However, if I put down 'undecided,' they might consider me unmotivated?

My freshman schedule is geared towards business/econ:

Calculus I (acing it)
Macroeconomics (micro next semester)
English (requirement, and good class, plus a fantastic TA agreed to write me a recommendation)
Geology (science/lab requirement)
+ music lessons on viola, piano, and composition
+ orchestra and chamber music

My intended major is double in music composition/business or econ. What if I put 'music,' even if my primary focus in business? What should I put on my Penn app?

Okay well you are a frosh. they don't expect you to know right away what you are going to do. Hell, I can guarantee that you will change your major at least once. I've gone from Business to BioChem now to Econ and Polisci and i am only a soph. So If you put down Undecided they will realize you are like the 85% of other students out there that have no idea what they want to do. Sometimes they ask so they know what the space is like, plus most schools don't require you to adhere to the intended major that you put on your app. they know you will change your mind... sometimes they expect it. Don't stress out.

I don't know why there would be any problem applying undecided. Call me crazy, but I think it is a little ridiculous that you have to decide what you want to do before you even get there. Isn't that the point? So you can explore lots of different things and figure it out? IMO if you show academic achievement then you give them no reason to think your unmotivated, rather just unsure about what you want to do. Why should you know at (insert age here) that you want to be an i-banker or doctor... ridiculous lol. If you feel really passionately about something then I would possibly recommend applying under a specific major because you can make a strong case for it. IMO your courses seem pretty diverse. You have science, music, math, econ, and english. That is a really well rounded schedule so I think you could def apply undecided.

Good luck and I hope you find my advice helpful!

I don't think it makes a difference either way. When I applied to Penn, I had said I would major in Chemistry. The major is not declared for you when you are accepted[I ended up declaring Sociology once I was here].

it shouldn't be a problem

but, i'm applying to cornell and on the transfer app you have to write an essay on why you're interested in that major and why you're suited for the program...the cornell school i'm applying to is all about fit so it's important for me...but if you apply to penn sas undecided, there's probably no essay that specific...so don't worry about it.

I've been in college for 2 months, and I've gone from International Relations to Govt/Economics to Policy Analysis &management...hehe.

Star, at Cornell, I'm applying for ILR, because it sort of sums up all of my interests: business, international relations, psych. I would have no trouble writing that essay, and in fact, I am already writing it. Unlike the Penn app though, the Cornell app just asks you to pick a school ('ILR'), not a concentration within the school

well ILR only has 1 major, so it's a little simpler I think. With HumEc, you have to write an essay on why you're picking humec and what major you're pursuing.
good luck with both penn and cornell! they are both such good colleges.

They are, and well worth giving all I have to them. Best of luck to everybody here, and thank you for your help!
