Transfering from a CCC to a UC

Hello everyone, I currently have a small dilemma which I have tried researching with no definite answer. This is currently my last semester at a CCC and I will be receiving my AA-T in sociology. I am looking to apply to UCR, I have already TAG’d this school and will be filling out the normal application Nov.1. My question is do I need to have 2 years of foreign language? I was looking at the IGETC and it seems I do not fulfill the foreign language requirement for a UC. However I will be graduating with an AA-T and have taken and completed all classes listed on ASSIST.ORG associated with UCR and my major.

Basically my question is do I meet the requirements to transfer? The UC Minimum transfer requirement “http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/transfer/preparing-admission/minimum-requirements/index.html” List nothing about having a foreign language.

I do not know if this matters but I just got my transcripts from high school and It seems I have 1.5 years of foreign language completed with a C or better. One year I got a D in one spanish class so that will not count.

Thanks in advance for your help!

@honormulan As long as the last semester hs language course (at the end of two years) is C or better you have fulfilled the two year language requirement. In other words, if the D was from a semester prior to the last semester, you have completed two years of high school and have fulfilled IGETC. But the last semester cannot be a C-.

That is because langauge is a validation subject, meaning the last C or better grade in a higher level trumps all earlier grades from lower-level courses (even Ds and NPs).

The last semester of spanish I took in high school was Spanish 1-B and received a B grade.

Assuming that is the end of the second year, then you have passed two years of hs language.

If it is not the equivalent of two years you will need to take one semester of language at your CCC that is equal to one year of college language (it is usually a daily course) or two semester courses if the accelerated course is not offered. Note: one year of college language is = to two years of hs language.

If your major requires IGETC you need to complete it or you may not get in. It is not a UC req per se, but you will drastically lower your chances without the one extra course. Don’t chance it over one course.

Well this is how it goes I failed spanish 1B but was still allowed to move to spanish 2… Idk how… So I came back to spanish 1B before graduating my summer term going into my senior year and took Spanish 1B and got a B. So spanish 1B is my LAST spanish class ever taken in high school. Does that change things?

@honormulan so you took it out of sequence?
What level was the highest you took and was the grade C or better? Spanish 2 one year?

Your retaking Spanish 1-b is irrelevant, so forget about that. If you completed Spanish 2 with a C or better will have completed two years. 100% certainty. Don’t worry.

Spanish 2A Spanish 2B were the highest levels. Spanish 2A C+ spanish 2B C

Then you have the equivalent of two years of high school level language. That will certify you for IGETC. You don’t send the transcripts to the UC until after you have been accepted. The CCC just needs it so they can certify you come end of spring.

Congratulations!

Okay so whats the whole deal with the C grade or better thing? When I got a D in one of four classes that doesnt matter? And thanks

It only works with language and certain lower level math courses - because it’s all based on your level. The fact that you passed spanish 2b means that logically you must know spanish 1. It won’t work in other subject areas.

Look at the Spanish answer partway down:

Alrighty thank you so much! (:
