I applied to both William & Mary, and UVA last year. I was deferred then denied from UVa and applied regular to WM so I was simply denied. Im looking to transfer to one of them, but I dont know if it makes a big difference if I apply for spring vs fall semester, and whether or not I have a good chance for either. I graduated with a weighted GPA of 4.1 and took a total of 9 AP classes. This semester I'm at JMU taking 17 credits which I am obviously striving for A's in. What do you think I should do?

I think it would be to your advantage to apply for the Fall 2015 or a later term. With only one college semester under your belt, you’re not going to be able to show as nearly as much change and growth as if you were in college for at least a year. They want to see that you are able to handle their courseload and that you will do well there. By having more semesters under your belt, you can show how you have improved since high school which is important if you didn’t get in the first time around. More datapoints in college means that will rely less on “college predictors” like SATs or grades in AP courses, which I don’t think are as accurate measurements anyway.

I hope you are enjoying your time at JMU. I’m currently attending W&M as a freshman. I was able to get in with only 8 AP courses and from OOS, so I think you have a decent shot if you apply again as a transfer if you had at least a solid high school background. If you ever have any questions about the school, don’t hesitate to ask!
