Transfering Schools within Ithaca

I was accepted as undecided to Ithaca. It was my safety school but I cannot stop thinking about how wonderful and selective their theatre program is. Would it be hard for me to transfer to a major in theatre if I went to Ithaca? And could I transfer after one semester or would I have to wait a full year.

LinneaS88,

Would switching from "undecided" to a theatre major really be considered "transfering"? ...since you haven't declared a major which you'd be transfering from? I honestly don't know.

Getting into the Ithaca theatre department requires auditions and such, I believe. You should contact the department directly (and soon) for specifics on when you could audition, whether you could declare a theatre major AFTER starting school, etc. Their email address is theatrearts@ithaca.edu, or you might need to call them in person to get an answer ASAP. Go to the Academics link on www.ithaca.edu for more information.

Hope that helps, and break a leg!

During the pre-audition speech at Ithaca College for BFA applicants, the theater dept chair warned students that if they get accepted to another (non-theater) major, they should not think that this is an easier way to eventually get into the theater department. In order to get into the BFA program, they'd still have to audition with all the students from outside trying to get into theater (chances are 1-3% or something like that). So it's definitely not something to count on.

Yeah, I realize it couldn't be easy, of course. Basically (if I don't get into the theatre schools I applied to) I plan on going somewhere for a year and then transfereing to a theatre school, which may as well be Ithaca since I hear it is wonderful. I'm not afraid of an audition, haha, just looking for a good eduacation.
I don't know yet if im pushing for a BFA in acting, though, because right now a BA is my goal. Many theatre schools that offer BA's and BFA's only require auditions for the BFA. I guess I'll see where I'm at in a few months. Thanks for your help though.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure if you just want a BA you do not need to audition. However, I would think getting into the BFA program if you did not initially get in would be extremely difficult. Not only is it competitive upon entering, but if you are a BA, you do not take the same classes as a BFA major. They are totally different! I don't think they would allow basic BA classes to transfer into the BFA either (not sure on that, but from the differences I've seen I would guess in many instances that is the case). Therefore, I think it would be easy to get behind in your classes if you did not begin your first year, and that would make it more difficult to graduate in 4 years.

The BA isn't a problem. But if you are at all interested in the BFA, it is very difficult.
