I am currently a University at Buffalo student who wants to transfer to Stony Brook. I applied for the Fall '07 and was asked to send in my mid-year report for further evaluation. I decided not to partly because i was accepted already accepted at Buffalo and was undecided whether i would major in Computer Science or not. It was a struggle between choosing my passion or going with what everyone else was doing and wanted me to do. I went to Buffalo to use the year to re-evaluate my goals and learn a bit of self reliance. Luckily my passion won out and I decided to Major in Computer Science. Now that I know what i want to major in I am intrigued to become part of the Stony Brook computer science class. I am not sure if i should transfer for the spring term or wait the year out. The problem with transferring the spring term is that the school would put most of the focus on my High School GPA which went down from a 3.0 to a 2.5 as senioritis hit me. My SATs are not that impressive either as I took it once and got a 600 and a 690. By the end of the year i should have 30 credits which should be enough to bypass high school grades and by the rate it is going i should have maintain a GPA around 3.5.

I would like a suggestion from someone who went through or knows the process. How likely it is to be accepted spring term as opposed to the fall term. I also noticed that the deadline for transfer admission is before the grades are made which makes it possible that my college grades are not gonna be considered for either term. Thank you for reading this and your help is much appreciated.

You're going to have problems being admitted for the spring if your high school grades aren't strong; although if your SATs are good, that'll override a lot.

I really can't say anything from just a post on a Web site, but worst case, we're going to wait for a full year of coursework. 2.75 looks like it's going to be the ballpark minimum transfer GPA for spring '08, depending on what the application pool looks like once we start reviewing applications, which should happen some time in early October. But that's really based on a 24-credit minimum, not just one semester.

Also -- it's not possible to transfer directly into the Computer Science program; it's a two-step process. You'll be admitted to the university, then you have to apply to CEAS (the College of Engineering & Applied Sciences) for admission to the program. Full details are in the undergrad bulletin.

Thanks for the help, i would also like to know how difficult it is to commune between the NYC and the university. Am I required to dorm if i transfer for next year fall term? Thank you for your help

I don't recommend commuting by train or car from NYC...it's just too long. You aren't required to dorm, in fact you'll be lucky to get housing that's not tripled or housing at all.

Entity's more or less right, but for what it's worth, the Stony Brook LIRR station is right on campus. It's about a 90-minute ride from Penn Station. The drive would be shorter, but parking is touchy.

go to binghamton for computer science...their program is much more respected....im at stony only for a semester and then im transferring to an upstate school...if you rly like the school then i would suggest dorming bc penn to stony is a long train ride...One of the things i dont like here is that everyone goes home on the weekend

Parking is also a little ridiculous here. The South P Lot (the only one that has spaces at 9am) is about a half mile from campus and you need to take a bus to get to campus.

All the other reasonable lots that are within walking distance are packed by at least 8:00am.

To bran10^^, I disagree, IMO I think SB's CS program is stronger. Respected is different, but SB's is stronger.

Take this with a grain of salt;

Gourman Undegrad Rankings for CS. Pretty highly ranked if you ask me, but then again these rankings don't mean much and/or don't really matter enough to make a difference. They should be used as a gauge.
