I was accepted into Cornell for this academic year but turned them down for another school which I realize now was a horribly made decision. If I were to apply for a transfer would my chances be affected because I turned them down previously?

Intriguing, as I too face an almost identical dilemma. I believe your chances would actually be good given that you were accepted once and surely have some record of it.

Yes I think you would have a really good chance of being re-admitted given that you provide a really good reason why you want to be there now.

I don't think it will hurt you. It certainly shows that you were their caliber. I definitely know of students who were accepted as transfers at schools where they had been accepted as freshman but did not choose.

Thanks a lot for your responses. Does anyone else have an opinion or an experience regarding my situation? And also do you think my essays should be completely redone? I liked them a lot and I think they were one of the reasons I got in. I'm also going to have to get to know a professor well for a recommendation which won't be easy considering the fact that my classes are all big lectures.

Also, how many recommendations do transfer students usually have to get? The applications will be due early into the second semester so I will only have my four first semester professors to choose from.

My son is doing what you're doing - transferring to a college he had originally declined. They were able to pull out his original application and all he had to provide was a copy of his final HS transcript and a personal statement explaining why he now wanted to transfer there. He wants to transfer for the spring, 08 semester.
