I want to transfer to berkeley for computer science major from CC, my parents are pushing me to transfer asap even though i was originally planning to finish all math pre-reqs before applying, which would require me to stay an extra year before applying, but looks like i am going to apply for next year now. I will be taking precal next fall, and cal 1 in winter and cal 2 next spring and hopefully differential equation and linear algebra in summer in berkeley if i got in.

Do students get accepted with work in progress? Would it hurt my chance a lot?

I am kind of disappointed that i wont be able to execute the plan i had in mind, i really want to get into cal :(

I know someone who got in even though he was missing differential equations and linear algebra for physics major, but it probably won’t look good considering your major only has a few prereqs. I actually stayed at my cc an extra year to finish prereqs and it feels much better knowing I won’t be behind when I transfer

CS transfers are generally behind to begin with, missing extra pre-reqs (assuming you won’t have 61ABC, CS70, or any EE classes) might be hard to catch up with. Also, taking Diff Eq and Linear over the summer means you’ll have to wait until Fall to begin the CS series, which will make scheduling difficult. CS/EECS transfers are behind to begin with, missing extra courses sucks.

Either way, if it’s only those two classes you’re missing (you wouldn’t have anything else to take at CC) and you’ve met the 60 credits requirement, you should apply. If you don’t get in and are still set on Cal, you could always wait a year and try again.

Are you able to take a math this summer, to get more pre-reqs done?

I am going to take math this summer, but it will be the prereq for pre-cal since i came late to register for classes this semester because i had a problem with health insurance

I would be finishing all igetc requirements by the time i apply, but i would only fall behind with math

I wish if i can stay extra year to finish all the math pre-reqs but my parents are having some financial difficulties

Do you think i should try to convince my parents to stay for extra year? The thing with CAL is hard to get in already, so there will still be a chance that i will finish every pre-req and not get in

If you’re only staying an extra year for one class, then by all means apply and save yourself a year. However, as you mentioned, admission to Berkeley is no guarantee, so are you considering other schools as well? Some schools might require, say physics, which you would probably have to stay an extra year for.

You could possibly just apply and go through with your plan. If you don’t get in, you can stay an extra year and finish the prereqs for Berkeley and any other schools you are looking at

I actually got admitted into Berkeley L&S with only 1 prereq done for my Biochem major that I ‘applied’ under but I guess it didn’t matter as much as, say, EECS or Haas since applying to L&S is basically applying Undeclared but since you have to declare by the 2nd semester, I’d highly advise against doing what I did. =P Now I’m pretty f***ed since my next 2 years are gonna be busy as hell.

Trying to get into the other UC’s without prereqs done are a no-go, though. Cal always has to be the odd one out.

Like jumpingpenguin, I got into L&S with only 1 out of 4 prereqs done. I do realize I’m going to be busting my @$$, and I might miss out on studying abroad as a result.

However, if I was in your position, I would do what your parents want and apply! If you qualify, even remotely, don’t delay.

Don’t do it! Try to complete as many prereqs as you can in the fall, winter and spring. You can’t finish your prereqs in the summer at a community college - and I don’t think the Transfer Edge is for prereqs either, it’s about getting ahead in your major.

Well I still need to finish two prerequisite classes for the psychology major. I will be taking those two classes during this summer at my community college before I transfer this fall. For the psychology major, Berkeley does allow you to take classes during the summer so you can complete the classes. Yet, it is specific to each major. I assume in most majors, you won’t be allowed to.
