Transfering to GWU, Georgetown

This fall I will be starting my freshman year of college at Northeastern University in Boston, but do not plan on staying there. For several years, I have known that I would like to attend George Washington University or, especially, Georgetown, but did not have the credentials to get in as a freshmen. Unfortunatly, neither of the schools have yet to be of much help regarding what I need to do in the next year or two to be qualified to transfer, and was hoping someone out there may be. My grades in HS were not to great (3.4 w/ a few AP) nor were my SAT scores (1260, M:630 V:630). If I were hoping to transfer to either of these schools, will I even have a chance with these numbers, even if I do signifigantly better in my first year of college? Also, I have contemplated taking the SAT's again, but will I have to take the new one, or are they still offering the old version for people in my position? Any other advice on how I may be able to boost my chances of getting in as a transfer student would be appreciated. Thanks. By the way, does anyone know if I were to apply during March of my Freshmen year to either of these colleges, would they consider my second semester grades (2nd semester ends in late April), or will they only consider the first semester?

Your SAT score of 1260 exceeds the average at GWU. Most colleges prefer to see a full year of college credits before you transfer. To have a chance in hell at Georgetown, you're going to need a GPA of at least 3.75 in challenging courses at NEU. Keep in contact with the transfer departments at each school to make sure your courses will transfer.

Just a side note...most people here will tell you not to go into Northeastern expecting to transfer. You might find that you love Boston, or you love your department, etc.

Thanks for the reply. Thats nice to know that my SAT scores exceed the average at GWU. Just out of curiosity, do you say I should not go to NEU expecting to transfer because it is such a good school or because it is not highly regarded among more prestigious universities? Thanks

I say that because you will be spending at least a year there. Give the school a chance, because you might find that you love it. I would honestly say that NEU is about on par with GWU, especially with NEU's quickly increasing popularity. The biggest differences in selectivity are apparent in class rank and acceptance rate. I would not consider GWU "more prestigious" by any significant amount.

Georgetown is on another level, comparatively. Transfer rates are similar to freshmen admit rates, with transfer percentage being a bit lower (21% vs. 22% according to the college board website).

Any other advice on this matter? Imparticularly regarding transferring into Georgetown's business school? Has anybody succesfully transfered into the program or the university, and what were your stats? Thanks.

I kind of disagree with KarmaFairy though, go into college w/ a good attitude about it, but having "transferring" in the back of your mind should really help motivate you get a high GPA.

If you think you can get higher on the SAT, take it again-it'll be worth the effort especially if they see you took it again (they'll think you're interested in transferring).

Also get involved in a few EC's your first year.

What I really meant to convey was that OP should really give NEU a chance before deciding to transfer.
