Transfering to NYU/Binghamton from Buffalo

In fall 2010 i will be a freshman in University at Buffalo majoring in biochemistry. I want to study pre-med and in order to increase the chances of getting into an Ivy med school, i want to transfer to NYU or Binghamton. My high school GPA and my sat scores are not too great.

I recently graduated from JERICHO HIGH SCHOOL (ranked 48)
High school GPA: 3.4
SAT: 1600/2400
SATII: 610 Math Level 2

For this reason i would like to ask some suggestions. Please feel free to leave any suggestions!

binghamton won’t help and nyu won’t make much of a difference for med school admissions. you’re competing with people who go to peer schools - applicants from top schools are compared to other applicants from top schools. state schools kids are compared with other state school kids whose schools are of similar rank. in my opinion, nyu is not worth the money and is super overrated. binghamton is better than buff, but not by much. if you’re happy at buff, just stay there.

if you are dead set on transferring, i would apply to bing for soph year and if you don’t get in, try for nyu for junior year to give you some more time to do well in college and then your HS stats won’t matter as much.

unrelated ps - i’m from plainview

I think you should really try giving Buffalo a chance this fall. It’s not healthy to go into a school already wishing/knowing you’re going to be transfering out. Get involved in campus activities and such, and rethink transfering when your first semester is over. If you go in with a bad attitude, you’re never going to have fun, and who knows, you may end up loving it there.

Your best shot for med school would probably be at Buffalo, assuming its easier to make an A there than at NYU. Your GPA is more heavily weighted than from where it was that you got it. This way you can also focus more time on EC’s and eventually studying for MCAT.
And you havent even started there yet, give it a chance, you may like it.

I went to NYU for freshman year and wouldn’t recommend going there for pre-med. The tuition is very high, and the financial aid is almost all loans - not something you want if you’re going on to med school afterwords. Also, I’ve heard from friends that the pre-med course load is incredibly difficult, and time consuming. Freshman chemistry and biology classes can have over 700 students in a class, and studying hard all semester won’t even guarantee you a B. It’s not worth the likely lower GPA just to say you earned it at NYU.

Buffalo is a pretty underrated school. Also med school depends largely on your gpa and going to NYU definitely won’t help that as I’ve heard from friends that it is really difficult. On top of that your HS stats are pretty low and it would be fairly hard to transfer after 1 year.

At least TRY Buffalo. Even as a diehard NYU girl, I wouldn’t suggest it for pre-med. The financial aid is terrible for transfers and it won’t help you get into NYU SOM.
