I'm one of those late bloomers that caught fire in high school a little too late. AND it doesn't help that Visiting Temple for orientation earlier this month made me realize that a "big east coast" school isn't right for me. I have a 3.7 HS GPA and an ACT score of 22 so there's a reason why I'm attending 132 ranked Temple(according to US N&W Report). However, I am confident that I can be an elite college student. With that, I began to do some research on potential transfer destinations. What came out of my tireless googling and CCing was that LACs seemed to fit my learning style and personality the most. I took a look at a few Cali LACs and was amazed by the distinct flavors of each school. The Claremont colleges stood out the most as they have such a chill but highly competitive vibe to all the 5C's. Problem is.....I'm not really sure what it takes to get in. Can a great frosh year help overcome my lack of superior test scores? Does it help that my best friend is attending Pomona this year? I would love some help from anyone that has expirence with competitive LACs...Here's my Freshman Profile, I'm hoping to Ace out my first year:

I'm a political science major at Temple:
Taking 17 credits 1st sem(max for frosh)
Journalism and Society(3)
GenED Math(4)
Art History(4)
Sociology: Race & Immigration(3)
Political Science: The American Political System(3)

ECs
-Looking to become ACTIVE in the TU news paper. As a frosh I can only freelance....so I want to push out stories wherever I can find them .
-Joining a political alliance at Temple as well
-Film

Here's my wishlist:
Pitzer
CMC
Occidental
LMU: Loyola Marymount

How can I assure acceptence to any of the above colleges/universities? I honestly want out of Temple, so If anyone has any safety schools in mind, that would be great!

For 2011-12, Pomona accepted 19 of 217 transfer applicants, according to its Common Data Set file. The CDS for CMC currently is being updated, so it’s not available. However, you can expect transfer admission rates to be somewhat lower than first time, first year admission rates at many very selective colleges. Typically, there is not too much attrition at these schools.

Uh, no.

You wouldn’t think that mentioning that a friend is a part of the ‘Claremont family’ in a ‘Why CMC’ essay wouldn’t show that I would fit in at the 5Cs? From what I gathered from researching these schools, personality fit matters a ton in places like CMC and Pitzer. Am I wrong?

Pitzer is your best bet with your stats and they also accept applications without test scores (optional).

^^ No, I wouldn’t think so.

At some colleges, legacy status can be an advantage for an otherwise qualified applicant. At Pomona, having alumni/ae relations is “considered” (not “important” or “very important”, but “considered”, according to the CDS). I don’t believe “best friend” counts.

Is your family able to pay the full financial freight for the Claremont schools? I have heard from some friends that their financial aid for transfers is not generous.

You could also look at Whittier.

[Whittier College :: A Four-Year Liberal Arts College in Los Angeles, California](http://www.whittier.edu/)

Really? I’ve heard the Claremont schools are among the most generous in the country…

Some schools are very generous, but only to incoming freshman. you need to find out if the Claremont schools are generous to transfer students. They may or may not meet need for transfer students.

I’m pretty sure that LMU isn’t generous to transfer students. LMU doesn’t meet need for for frosh, so it very likely gives even worse aid to transfer students.

How much will your parents pay each year?

Do NOT cut ties with your CURRENT school until you’ve seen the FA pkg of a new school and your parents have looked it over to see if its affordable.

Around 25-28 K would be reasonable…are there any safety schools in Cali that are generous to transfers?

Safeties in Calif that are generous to OOS transfer students? Can’t think of ANY.

What was your FAFSA EFC for Temple?

Keep in mind that a generou school is only generous to those who QUALIFY for aid. If the school thinks that your parents should pay a lot more than $28k, then it will expect your family to pay that amount.

Transfer aside – If your FAFSA is $25-28k and your family finances are straight forward, I expect Pomona to come in on the low end of FAFSA or just a few thousand less; Pitzer and Oxy seem to calculate $5k above FAFSA.

Before going any further, run the Net Price Calculators.

We were told at a Pomona info session, transfers financial aid is calculated same as freshmen.
