Transfering to Tisch

Hello world! I am asking to be judged, guided and verbally assaulted here! Don't let me down...

I love philosophy. I really, really love philosophy. But let me just say I love certain types of philosophy a widdle bit more than others. And this preference is not in analytic philosophy's favor which my school definitely leans towards. For this reason, as well as many, many, many others, I wish to transfer.

Philosophy's new vehicle, I now realize, is the movie. The totality of a thought can't be captured in a proposition called p. It is something that needs to be set free by people engaging in a (Lacanian!) narrative. If in order to do that I need to embrace the simulacrum, so be it!

This is a relatively abrupt decision (from having no career aspirations to lofty ones in a matter of months), but that doesn't mean it wasn't well thought out. My whimsy runs deep.

NYU's place here now is obvious. Dramatic Writing at Tisch will train me to dramatically write dramatically better. CAS is also supposed to sport a great Phil department in their arsenal. NYU's huge student body also allows it to support a wider range of classes than just the obligatory ones. Going to Tisch enables you to major in CAS as well, but the exchange is not reciprocal.

A few things are weighing against me for Tisch:

-As an un-enlightened senior, I choose to not go to CAS.
-I have no solid/official extracurriculars showing a screenwriting passion and can see no way of getting them at my current school.
-No classwork/training in screen (or play) writing.
-No way to tell if my portfolio is any good as I am afraid to share that I am transfering to ANYONE.

I guess because I am posting on this site, my statz are obligatory.

Right now I am going to a school in New Hampshire with a name that starts with D and ends in "artmouth".

3.8ish College GPA

4.0+ High School GPA (4.2 or something), Valedictorian

2100-2200 SATs

36-24-36 BWH

APs to knock out most intros

Thanks to the wonky quarter system, my GPA represents only 3 classes (Kierkegaard, Costume Design, Writing class on "Othering")

Helped on costumes for school play

Currently taking Epistemology, Postmodernism and the Philosophy of Neuroscience

Work as a teaching assistant at the art workshops

This stuff doesn't scream "playwright"! It murmurs "pretentious"... Do I have a chance at Tisch? Independent of my screenwriting aspirations, I really want to transfer. If I don't get into Tisch, I can't be considered for CAS. I am also applying to CUNY Hunter so I have a more wallet-friendly alternative. My mystery school is giving me essentially a free ride and that will be DIFFICULT to give up - but dreams are dreams are dreams are dreams!

When it comes to the arts and applications that require portfolios, admissions can be a whole different ballgame, you might want to also post your thread on the Theater/Drama majors subforum.

Also, have you considered finishing at the D-school and going on for an MFA? Many of the MFA programs are supported by fellowships, teaching assistantships, etc.

That BWH stat killed me.

I think you have a great shot of getting in. Granted, you do need some artistic background at the very least, so I’d look into some sort of screenwriting classes, contests, and groups at or around Dmouth. Your stats (and based on your description of NYU, your writing) looks great and you’re set there.
“I have no solid/official extracurriculars showing a screenwriting passion and can see no way of getting them at my current school.” I don’t know about this; Dmouth is a liberal arts college so I’d think there would be at least a student group for it; if not, look into making one this coming semester. GPA isn’t as important as your portfolio imo, so you should definitely work on building that. Maybe consult professors you’re close to and ask them to look at it.

Oh and I go to Hunter College. Don’t transfer here. Trust me. Apply to other colleges you think would give you a good scholarship before you apply here. Just saying…

Yes, I could put off my dreams for another 3.5 years. Graduate school. MFA. The works. That is fine.

But I won’t put off my… my… life? Manover and my rascally self don’t mix. I can see how and why for some people this place is ideal – I just can’t see how this place would serve me. Education isn’t state-mandated anymore. I am this post-secondary edu-sphere out of my own free will. And in this world where college is a commodity, I wanna like what I am buying into. It is not just cash that is at stake but my time (my youth!) and to a certain degree my identity. Everything I learn becomes me. I’m here to let these people shape me in some way. Forgive me if I don’t want to come out looking like Henry Paulson.

I want to transfer.

All these grand statements… Man, I’m already getting the drama aspect down, aren’t I?

Your right, though, Entomom. Being at a liberal arts school doesn’t preclude my aspirations. I should grow more. I’d just wish I was at a place more conducive to the way I want to grow. Perhaps that is why I have focused in on city schools – the location guarantees a certain level of access to my ideal independent of the school itself. I’d be proud to say the Big Apple is my alma mater.

The lack of tangible history with dramatic writing is a huge weakness I was hoping to overcome with a pretty good academic history and, more importantly, a good portfolio. Say that trade-off doesn’t happen – I applied to Tisch and was rejected. Well, that means I also can’t go to CAS for philosophy (my first love) and do dramatic writing as a supplement. One less urban liberal arts school on an already short list. Risk it? I am willing to as long as the odds aren’t completely against me. Hmm…

Purplenurple, it seems like half my high school goes to Hunter and had similar reactions to the idea of me transferring there! Is there a better humanities CUNY? I really only know schools in this area. I was thinking of trying again at Columbia after being waitlisted last year. What else… Fordham? The New School? St. Johns? Hofstra? These are all liberal arts schools that I could spend my time at…

Hi! I’m an NYU transfer and I’ve been here for two years now. I successfully transfered in 2008.

DO GALLATIN. If you’re worried that you don’t have the background for full-blown, hardcore Tisch, look into the Gallatin School of Individualized Study. They LOVE LOVE LOVE transfer students and students that have strong opinions about what they want to study. They would eat up the philosophy and screenwriting stuff, and you would be able to take classes in CAS AND in Tisch. I mean, come on, there’s a Gallatin student majoring in “Grand Romantic Gestures in Literature”. That’s kind of awesome. You wouldn’t have a Tisch degree at the end, but you would have the NYU name and education, which will take you far. Half the people in my screenwriting class are in Gallatin.

Gallatin also loves unique backgrounds and killer essays, and no portfolio would be required for Gallatin. I’m just saying, as a transfer, you should try to look at the different options you have to get into NYU. Just something to think about.

Be aware that transferring into Tisch is REALLY HARD. They are very picky about who they take for the transfer spots. Gallatin and CAS take many more students.
