I managed to get into both UCLA and UCB as an undergraduate.

I am currently looking into the majors of East Asian languages (Chinese, Korean, Japanese) and Business. I intend to work in a business environment with my language skills.

As it happens, I applied for UCLA under East Asian language and Culture, and UCB as Japanese studies. With these declared majors, is it still possible to also major in business? I apologize if this question is silly, as I have not seriously considered how degrees and majors work. I simply looked to what class work I had infront of me and did my best to receive grades and not fuss over details of majors and degrees.

Given the above situation, what school would be preferable?

I have also heard that UCB tends to avoid UCB undergraduates for its graduate programs, is this true?

Strategically you made a very poor decision choosing a completely non-impacted major as your first choice, if your intent was to double as a business major or switch to a business major after enrollment. Business majors are severely impacted at both UCLA and Haas School of Business at Berkeley. Given the fact that the evalution and selection process is much more critical for impacted business majors at UCLA/UC Berkeley than it is for any language major, which not many people apply to, you’re not likely going to be able to switch majors or double major without having been directly admitted as a business major. For example, at UCLA the average admitted GPA for the major you were admitted to in 2011 was 3.65, whereas the highly impacted major of Business Economics had an averaged admitted GPA of 3.93. If you had chosen to apply as a Business Economics major (UCLA) or Business Administration (Berkeley) and then wanted to double major as a language major it would’ve been fairly easily, the reverse is practically impossible. Haas doesn’t allow transfers that have been admitted to the college of letters and science at Berkeley to even apply to switch majors:

Business Economics and Economics are both heavily impacted majors and UCLA doesn’t allow transfers to switch into either after they’ve been admitted:

If you’re really determined to double major or graduate as a business major, your best option would be to reapply directly to those majors and then seek a double major in East Asian languages/Japanese studies after you enroll.

Switching majors is out of the question, but I’m not too sure about the minoring part. You can give UCLA and UCB a call to see how they work. Each school works differently. I heard some of the lower tier UC’s aren’t as strict with this type of stuff.
