transfering

if im not accepted i think im going to try to transfer for my sophmore year. Is it generally alright adapting to a brand new college your sophmore year? It kind of sucks knowing you missed your classes freshman year there and you have to try to make friends after everyone has kind of accepted their own cliques from the year before. any who has transfered before have any input on these kinds of situations?

It can be difficult to transfer depending on the situation. How unhappy are you at your present location? How out going are you? Most transfers find their way. It may be difficult at first though. The other problems some transfers may face is not getting on campus housing which does make it harder to meet people and is more isolating. A lot also depends on the school you are transferring to…some environments are easier to assimilate into and some schools have programs to help transfers adjust.

Kids in college are generally always looking to meet new people and new friendships are always forming all 4 years, so don’t choose not to transfer if it’s what you really want.

I think the OP is a HS senior talking about transferring in fall 09 if they don’t get into the school of their choice as a freshman for fall 08. Many students transfer sop year, for a variety of reasons. However, going into freshman year with the idea of transferring immediately may not be the most positive way to start your college career. Here are some things to consider when you think about transferring:

You will be filling out applications (usually more demanding than freshman applications) while you are trying to keep up your grades, get to know profs and participate in ECs (all important factors for transfers).

You will be writing more essays, including good reasons for Why you want to transfer and Why you want to transfer to college X.

You may not be able to discuss your transfer plans freely with your friends and thus will carry this emotional load on your own.

If your plan is to transfer “up” to a more selective school that you did not qualify for as a freshman, recognize that for the vast majority of schools, transfer acceptance rates are substantially lower than for freshmen. It will be harder to get into these schools as a transfer and you will have to show improvement during your time in college.

When transferring as a sophomore, your SAT scores and HS gpa and record will still be considered as you apply when you’ve only finished one semester of college.

The social reasons that you’ve mentioned are also considerations for transfer students.

For most students who decide to transfer, it is a difficult decision that they make only after much soul searching.
