Here's the situation in brief: I transferred to UCSD as a history major but after a year decided I wanted to be a computer science major. I returned to my CC to work towards a computer science degree (with the intent on returning to UCSD. and yes, I have confirmed I can do this) because it is cheaper and safer.

So now I am at CC taking math and programming classes but I'm not sure if I want to return to UCSD. The reason? In all honesty, I'm fearful that UCSD engineering might be too much for my plate. It is infamous for being very rigorous and I would prefer to not sell my soul to school. But if I have no other options, I'm going to have to man up and face it.

But I want to know what my other options are. Can I transfer to another UC? I called UC Santa Cruz out of curiosity but the advisor seemed pretty sure I wouldn't be able to transfer to another UC since I'm in senior standing.

Does anyone have any advice? I believe it is unlikely I can transfer to another UC but I'm pretty sure I would technically be able to transfer to a private uni or something. Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

The “general” policy tends to be that if you earn less than their individual limiation of units (usually around <80+ semester units) at a four year and then transfer and stay exclusively at a CC that your additional CC units will NOT count toward the unit cap. The exceptions to this are UCSB and UCSC who have a policy that any combination of two year and four year units count toward your unit cap which is 90 semester/135 quarter units. The UCs that have the aforementioned policy and their set limit are as follows: UCLA <86 semester units from four year only; Berkeley College of L&S <80 semester units from four year only; and Merced <80 semester units from four year only. Berkeley’s college of engineering appears to have a limit of 89 semester units of a combination of CC and four-year units. UCI has NO unit cap and UCR, UCD review on a case by case basis for students over 80 semester units.

So just a quick synopsis, if you’ve only stayed at a CC after your time at UCSD you should be considered for regular admission at UCLA, UC Merced, UCI, **UC Berkeley L&S/b. Your application will require further review by the dean of admission at UCR and UCD. You likely will be INELIGIBLE for admission at UCSC, UCSB, or **UC Berkeley Engineering/b.

Just man up and face it. Obviously you were willing to take on a challenge by switching from a history major, so why punk out now? If you had a shot at Berkeley or Stanford for CS, would you drop it because “everyone said it was hard”? Come on now.
