Transferring & A Gap Year

Hello all!
I have a pretty unique situation, at least I’ve never heard of anyone doing this before so I’m wondering if it’s even possible. I’m currently a freshman at a four-year university which I’ve decided is not the right place for me. I want to transfer to a different university, and I have a few options in mind, but the past few days I’ve been thinking about taking a gap year between freshman and sophomore years of college. That seems kind of crazy, but I’ve realized that I have no idea what I want to do with my life, and I’ve always wanted to go abroad. I want to take the year and be an au pair in France.

I guess I’m wondering, what would the logistics of this look like? Is it even possible? I don’t know if I should apply to a new school this spring, and then defer, or if I should drop out and then apply next spring. My choice of university might change but the time I’m done with a gap year, so I’m not sure if I want to commit to anywhere this spring. Are you able to apply to schools after taking a year off of college? What about financial aid? I’m just confused and I need to decide soon, so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I know someone who is actually on a gap year between freshman and sophomore year right now. It’s not as uncommon as you think! I believe that she is applying for schools now (while she’s on her gap year). Some schools definitely won’t let you defer once you’ve been accepted as a transfer. You really need to check with each individual school.
