Transferring after being disqualified because of ELWR?

I have been dismissed from UCSD because I could not pass the Basic Level exit exam.
I am wondering what my options are, I plan to go to Community College and do my GEs there. I know I can apply for readmission at UCSD but I was wondering if I could apply to other UCs? And would it be readmission?
Don't really know what my options are.

Are you talking about the California High School Exit Exam(CAHSEE)?

@Cayton No, he is talking about a writing exam that UCSD students need to take.

Wow, didn’t know that UCSD did that, @CollegeDropout1.

Well, @egemily, you can certainly apply to other UCs after you’ve completed enough units and are not in senior standing, and I don’t think it’d count as “readmission.” You should verify this with a counselor, though.

I’m assuming you were admitted as a freshman? Here us what it says on the UC page;

"All incoming California students who have not met the Entry Level Writing Requirement by April 1, must take the UC Analytical Writing Placement Examination. The exam will be administered the morning of the second Saturday in May, at testing centers throughout the state.

In early April, students will receive a letter directing them to the test center at which they must take the test.

In mid-June, students can log in to their campus’s admission website to check whether or not they have passed the exam. Results of the exam will not affect a student’s admission to the University. Those who do not pass the examination can still satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement before enrolling in the university by achieving a satisfactory score on one of the tests listed above or by completing an acceptable college course in English composition with a grade of C or better.

Students who have not satisfied the Entry Level Writing Requirement at the time they enroll in their classes must take a writing course designated by their campus."

^ Good info Lindy

My concern would be about being adequately prepared for UCSD. OP didn’t state why they had difficulty passing the exam, but maybe CC is a better route to build up the basic skills before entering university.

I’m wondering if OP is int’l because no offense to OP but how in the world could you get in to a UC as a freshman without having passed the four years of high school English, or done APs, and of course the essays, etc? And as a transfer you need those two English courses.

Wow, so all income UC students need to take this test! @egemily are you an international student?

@collegedropout1 not all students. On that page it lists ways to avoid it - mainly AP, IB tests or ACT/SAT scores.

But also that page seems to imply not passing is not grounds for dismissal.

That was my thinking Lindy, but I didn’t want to make OP feel bad

Okay I am not an international student.

I did take both AP English classes in high school but I did not pass one test and I did not take another AP test. I did pass all my english classes through out high school with good grades.

I did not take the analytical placement test because I could not attend the days it was hosted.

I have been in UCSD for a year. I took two Basic Writing classes that I did well in but you cannot move on until you pass the Exit Exam, for some reason I could not pass that exam which consisted of one essay.

I took it over summer and felt very confident in my exit exam essay but still did not pass so now I am being disqualified.

@lindyk8

Wow, that is really too bad. Well, yeah CCC sounds like your best option. Maybe you’re one of those ppl who chokes when taking a test. It happens.

Were the English classes that you were taking remedial?

I really don’t get why the OP has a problem, or why he would get dismissed from the UCSD. Failing the Basic Level exit exam does not constitute dismissal from the university. It even says this right off the Basic Level exit exam website:

“If you do not pass the Entry Level Writing Requirement, you will need to demonstrate a minimum proficiency in composition through course work. You can do this by enrolling in SDCC 1 during your first quarter of residence at UCSD, or as soon thereafter as space is available in the course. SDCC 1 is a Mesa College course taught at UCSD as part of a cooperative program with the San Diego Community College District. You must pass an examination at the end of the course to satisfy the Entry Level Writing”

Did the University actually tell you, you were dismissed?

Oh ok, now I understand! That seems really harsh! Why don’t you try to appeal?

Yes I’m going to try to appeal before school starts. I am just trying to figure out my options if my appeal is not granted.

Have you examined what your issue is? Are you mis-reading the prompt? Do you have test anxiety? Do you proof read once complete? Do you spell check? Is your handwriting legible? Does you evidence support your conclusion? Does the essay flow? Are you dyslexic?

I’d be curious what your CC placement test would say.

How are you in your other classes? What is your major? Do you struggle with reading/writing in those classes?

Hi. I was just wondering what was the result of this. Did you manage to appeal? I’m afraid that I’ll be in a similar situation so I want to know how this ended up.
