So here is my situation:
I attended a private university fall 2008, but by spring 2009, my grades were so bad they kicked me out. It's a pretty good school (top 50 or so), out of state (I live in California). I think this experience was definitely a wake up call for me... I decided to change my slacker ways, got a job over the summer, and signed up for community college classes in the fall. I have gotten straight A's at my cc, and plan on continuing to do so until I can transfer. My only concern: will any school, especially UCs/CSUs take me seriously? I understand that even if I get a 4.0 in my CC, work 30 hours a week, am involved in my community, etc., schools will see that I failed out of my previous university.
Does anyone have some advice or guidance on this? I talked to my CC transfer counselor, but she was no help. She pretty much just told me to "not stress" about this situation... but I can't really help it because it's a bad one.

I appreciate any input anyone has!

I can’t speak from any experience, but an upward trend means a hell of a lot! Keep up the grades and the solid work ethic, and find some people on CC who’ve been through something similar. Good luck!

Talk with your transfer counselor again about the specific requirements for articulation agreements in your major field. If you take those classes, and earn the required grades in them, you should be guaranteed admission.

Lots of people have ugly academic histories - especially when we are talking about the first year of college! That is probably why your counselor told you not to stress about your situation. Stay focused on earning good grades, and ultimately things will work out well.

Wishing you all the best.

Thanks for your replies! What level of schools could I look at? For example, would I have a chance at a good school like UCLA or should I focus on state schools?

The pre-major requirements are pretty different for the various schools, so I need to start planning which schools I will be focusing on.

Cal will probably not take you, but other UC campuses might. CSU will definitely NOT care, as long as your recent grades are good.
