Transferring after first year at a CC

Hello,

I’m a NYS resident who is attending a local CC. I want to transfer out after this spring 2017 semester is finished, and attend SUNY New Paltz for the Fall of 2017.

I didn’t try very hard in HS, but I did go to a pretty good public school. My GPA was an 82 and I took a few honors courses (maybe 3) and one AP.

I started trying harder once I got to college, and after the first semester, I achieved a 3.567 GPA. I took 17 credit hours that semester. One of my HS courses offered dual credit, which I got a B in so my overall GPA is now a 3.490 (so annoying lol) and I have a total of 20 GRADED credits. I am anticipating on having 34 credits by the time I would enroll at NP.

I haven’t applied to New Paltz mainly bc I just finally visited yesterday (it’s almost 5 hrs away from me). I really liked the campus and atmosphere. I also haven’t been able to speak to admissions on some application questions that I have.

My questions are…

Is a 3.490 overall GPA for basically one semester enough for NP to overlook my poor HS GPA? I am taking 14 more credits at the moment, but since I’m applying now, this will be my grade on the application.

Am I applying late? (I know deadline is May 1st but with rolling admission, the sooner you apply the better)

And…

I haven’t asked profs for letters of rec, I can really only think of one solid prof and another one who knows me less, whom I have now. Is this bad? The SUNY app doesn’t even have a personal essay nor does it seem like it has letters of recommendation but I don’t have a very strong record yet IMO.

Thanks.

Edit: forgot to mention, I took the older (2015) SAT twice. My critical reading and math combined score is 1190.

From the New Paltz website:

If the applicant has less than 45 completed credits, their high school academic record and SAT/ACT scores will be considered as well.

I don’t know how a 82 converts to 4.0 scale, but if you’re worried about your high school GPA why not wait until you have enough units that they don’t ask for high school? I know CC isn’t amazing, but it would save you money down the line too.

They admitted about 46.97% of transfer applicants last year which is actually a bit higher than their freshman acceptance rate.

@philbegas - I reeeeeeallly do not want to stay two years at CC. Money isn’t really an issue. I only came here because I didn’t really start the college search until it was too late due to low interest.

The 46% is good news

An 84-86% is a 3.0, and I had an 82… So I probably had like, a 2.9 or 2.8.

I applied yesterday, and they don’t require or even ask for LOR or a personal essay. I hope my college GPA and decent SAT carries my application…
