What GPA would you recommened from transferring from GSU? And the scholarship for parts making less than 33k they pay for the rest, will that cover me after I transfer? And are there scholarship for transfer students?

You’ll want to call the financial aid office and ask about the scholarships. There are scholarships available to transfer students, but only that office will be able to tell you.

There’s no real “recommended” GPA to transfer from GSU (as long as your application is approved). But keep in mind that Tech has lower GPA’s than GSU. Expect your GPA to drop by about 0.5 just because of the way the schools operate.

How many semester would it take to transfer? And get the 30 hours they request. And is it possible to transfer after your fall semester sophomore year?

It depends on what you are trying to transfer in as. Some majors have harder gpa/course requirements than others for transfer admissions. There are minimum gpa requirements (overall/ math-science) needed to transfer but you should call admissions and find out what they consider a competitive gpa for the semester you’re looking at. For engineering, a math-science gpa of 3.4 is probably enough with a 3.0 overall, provided they have enough slots open.

In the case where you are able to jump right in and start taking the required classes it shouldn’t take more than 3 semesters. Of course this also depends on which major you are trying to transfer in as.

A computer science major which commuting. Don’t you need at least 30 credits and can’t you get that in 2 semesters?

<a href=“Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission”>Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission;

Yes you need 30 semester credits and you could do computer science in 2 semesters. You apparently only need English I & II Calc I & II. Oddly CS seems to be one of the easier majors to transfer in as.

You need to finish 30 credits, so you would apply during your third semester.

Just a quick thought: If you go to GSU for a year after high school and major in computer science, is it possible to complete all 30 hours in 2 semesters and then transfer to tech sophomore year of college?

That’s great, but I heard GSU calculus isn’t the same as GT Calculus. I wonder how behind I will be.

Yes. You will need to take 30 hours, maintain a 2.7 GPA for in-state and 3.0 for out-of-state. You also need to have completed Calc I, Calc II, English I, English II, a lab science, and Tech recommends Linear Algebra before applying. According to Oscar, these classes at GSU are Math 211, Math 212, ENG 111/ENGL 1101/ENGL 1103, ENG 112/ENGL 1102 at GSU and one lab science (such as Chem 1212/122).

You have to apply after the 30 hours are complete, so you would apply during your sophomore year. Once accepted, you need to wait 1 semester before starting at Tech, so you would probably start 2nd semester sophomore year or first semester junior year.

Oh okay, thanks a lot. Is it possible to get all 30 hours completed in one semester so I can go in the beginning of Sophomore year instead? And if Linear Algebra is recommended would it be a good idea to take it to higher my chances of getting accepted at GT?

Georgia State will not let you take 30 hours in one semester.

It sounds like you want to be at GT ASAP. I think the more prepared you are the easier you can make GT on yourself. Honestly, I wouldn’t transfer until I finished the entire calc sequence and linear algebra. Physics is a weed out course at GT so i’d try to either finish physics I & II before coming or do it in the summer at your local CC once you’ve transfered to GT.

Okay but I heard you need a one semester gap after you get accepted to transfer. So those that count over the summer or do I have to take summer classes for it to count. Also I will take Calculus 1 the first semester and 2 the second. But I never knew about physics, maybe I will take 1 in gsu the one that tech. I can handle the work after I transfer.

As long as Tech accepts the credits they can be from fall, spring, or summer. Anything you take during the 1 semester gap will be accepted by GT provided that the GT offers credit for those courses (https://oscar.gatech.edu/pls/bprod/wwtraneq.P_TranEq_Ltr)

In the past, for transfer students who took physics I prior to acceptance, GT offered a physics bridge course (which i believe was credit-less) that was designed to bring the student up to speed so they wouldn’t be left behind when taking physics II at GT. I don’t know if they still do this but it’s recommended to finish a sequence.

OK, with physics: For one, make sure that GSU doesn’t have two classes of intro. physics like we do at Emory. We have trig. based physics sections and a calc. based physics section. You definitely need to take calc. based or GT won’t accept it. And I don’t recommend taking electricity and magnetism (Calc. physics II here. It’s even known to be extremely difficult here, so you know it’ll be hard at Tech. I’ll let you know how it goes for me
) at Tech. If you plan to do that, you might as well take both at Tech.

Before taking any class, go to http://oscar.gatech.edu and select the right most icon “Transfer Equivalencies” then search by college. Make sure that the classes you are about to take at GSU show up on that list as having a GT Equivalent. The go to the major’s website (e.g. here for cs: [Overview — College of Computing](http://www.cc.gatech.edu/education/undergrad/bscs/bscs-threads)) and make sure that the GT Equivalent is needed for your major.

Personally, I would do it backwards. I would go to the major’s website (for example, let’s look at Biochemistry: [Georgia Tech :: Chemistry & Biochemistry :: Undergraduate Curriculum :: Biochemistry Track](http://www.chemistry.gatech.edu/undergraduate/curriculum/bsbiochemistry/)

In the first semester, I am recommended to take CHEM 1310, MATH 1501, ENGL 1101, CS 1371, and HPS 1040.

Then I would go to Oscar and find the GSU Equivalencies: GT CHEM 1310 = GSU CHEM 1212, GT MATH 1501 = GSU MATH 2211, GT ENGL 1101 = GSU ENGL 1101, GT CS 1371 = GSU CSC 2310, GT HPS 1040 = GSU KH 3000.

So my schedule at GSU would be CHEM 1212, MATH 2211, ENGL 1101, CSC 2310, and KH 3000. But before registering, I would look at GSU’s chemistry major (in case my transfer is rejected) found here: [B.S. in Chemistry — Georgia State University](http://www.gsu.edu/bs_chemistry_pa.html) . I can see from that sheet that MATH 2211, CHEM 1212, and ENGL 1101 are required for the GSU degree. CSC2310 and KH 3000 are not required. So, maybe I go back and look at my schedule, and instead of taking those right now, I take GSU PHYS 2211K which is equivalent to GT PHYS 2211, which is required by both schools.

New Schedule: PHYS 2211K, MATH 2211, CHEM 1212, ENGL 1101 (15 hours) and maybe KH 3000 if it’s an easy course.

Then I look at the GT transfer requirements here: <a href=“Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission”>Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Undergraduate Admission; and see that for my major, Biochemistry, the above classes meet half of my transfer requirements (Lab Chemistry, Physics I, English I, and Calc I). So now I know that I have a schedule that 1) meets the requirements to transfer to Tech, 2) will not put me behind if I transfer to Tech, and 3) will not put me behind if I stay at GSU.

Let’s say you start at Georgia State in Fall 2010. To be able to apply to GT, you need 30 hours at Georgia State, which you should have at the end of Spring 2011. You apply for transfer admission at the start of Summer 2011. Your application would be approved during Summer 2011. You would need to go to Georgia State in Fall 2011 (gap semester) and take classes. Then you would start at Georgia Tech in Spring 2012. All classes taken at Georgia State (Fall 2010, Spring 2011, Summer 2011, Fall 2011) can be transferred to Tech.

So why is there a gap semester? In the above case, you’d be accepted in late Summer 2011 (probably August). That doesn’t give the admissions office, registrar’s office, bursar’s office, office of the dean of students, etc. enough time to get you into their systems (that takes a few months). So, they make you wait a semester to get you into the system before you can enroll at Tech.

What are the chances of getting the transfer regretted?

G.P.,
What is a competitive GPA for transferring to GT. I know the minimum in state is 2.7 (or 3.0 for mechE), plus all required courses by major, but to actually have a really good shot, what are we talking about? 3.5? 3.75?? Higher???
