Let’s say you start at Georgia State in Fall 2010. To be able to apply to GT, you need 30 hours at Georgia State, which you should have at the end of Spring 2011. You apply for transfer admission at the start of Summer 2011. Your application would be approved during Summer 2011. You would need to go to Georgia State in Fall 2011 (gap semester) and take classes. Then you would start at Georgia Tech in Spring 2012. All classes taken at Georgia State (Fall 2010, Spring 2011, Summer 2011, Fall 2011) can be transferred to Tech.

So why is there a gap semester? In the above case, you’d be accepted in late Summer 2011 (probably August). That doesn’t give the admissions office, registrar’s office, bursar’s office, office of the dean of students, etc. enough time to get you into their systems (that takes a few months). So, they make you wait a semester to get you into the system before you can enroll at Tech.
