I really screwed up in high school, my grades weren't very good. Luckily, I was able to be accepted to St. John's University in Queens, but I'm looking to transfer since the school is so expensive and I want to try to get into a better school, plus I don;t really love it here.

For most universities it says something like this on the website for transfer applicants: "all applicants with less than XX(usually 29 or less, or at least at the schools I'm looking at that's what it is) credits must send high school transcripts." I'm currently taking 15 credits a semester, meaning that by the end of my freshman year (May) I'll have 30 completed credits. However, most schools transfer application deadlines for Fall 2014 is in the middle of second semester, does that mean that if I were to apply during my second semester that I would be given credit for the courses I'm taking second semester therefore cancelling out my high school grades? Or do the courses have to be completed before they count? Because I'd like to be at a new school for Fall 2014, but if colleges see my high school grades I don't know if just one good semester of college will be enough to cancel them out.

It’s not so much a matter of canceling out HS grades, but for soph transfers you have a 4 yr HS record and only a sem (and possibly a mid-term report) of college work when decisions are made. Therefore, your HS record will be given more weight, as a jr transfer this reverses and your college record is given more weight.

Transfer admissions works much like fr admissions, you are assessed and given a provisional decision before finishing the academic year. If accepted, at the end of the year you will submit your final transcript and colleges have the ability to rescind your admission if you don’t perform adequately. If your record is fine, at that time they will give you credit for any classes that they accept as a transfer.

I really can’t even afford to be here anymore, so would one semester at a 3.5 and good mid-term reports be able to cancel out high school you think?

It really depends on how many credits you have under your belt. Usually, a certain amount of credits puts you under a certain standing (freshman, sophomore, etc). So you should really aim for the recommended credit number that the school you are applying to gave.
