Transferring and taking a year off?

Hello everyone,

I am a desperate college kid who is dreaming about transferring out of my school. I hate this school, hate the people, hate the city. I knew it in the very first month staying here, but I didn't trust my own feelings and thought I would give my college a 2nd chance. But nothing has changed, I still hate it. The people here are great, they just aren't the type of people who I would be comfortable to be around with.

It is now winter.

The school I want to transfer into the most is from California which doesn't accept Spring applicant. My 2nd choice are schools from Wisconsin and Michigan.

My concerns are, should I accept the offer from the 2nd schools if I ever be admitted, or should I take half a year off and apply for my dream school in the Fall? Please consider the long period of time, which is from spring to beginning of fall. I guess I can work and take on an internship, but then I know that it would be extremely hard to go back to school.

For so long i've been wondering about where I should go, what I should do. I want to change my life now. I want to take on adventures, opportunities to learn about people around me.

Thank you so much for your help, I trust and appreciate all of your advice and experience.

First of all, I am so sorry that your college experience is going so badly. If you are sure that this school is not for you and that its not just homesickness, cruddy weather, depression etc.that is making you feel this way, then you should start now to actively seek out options. There are some schools that will accept your application as a new freshman if you apply before you finish your first year. You need to see what options exist for you. Does your dream school have early admission or early decision. If so time is short but perhaps you could submit those and find out in December if you are admitted then take second semester off to explore, work travel. I would start by calling the school in question, explaining your dilemma in a positive manner, try not to say your school is crappy etc… Or you could apply to be a transfer student for next year, finish out the year at current University and try to make the best of it, who knows, by the end of the year you may love it!
Only you can answer whether or not your should accept 2nd choice schools but make sure you are picking the school that is right for you and not one that you think you should be at. Good luck, I know how agonizing this can be!
