I am currently a first year at Smith college, ranked #19th, what are my chances at tufts? The thing is , I applied last year as a senior and I got flat out rejected, so if it is impossible for me to get in, I won't want to do it again, just to break my heart once more. :(

my resume isnt very impressive,, do I even have a chance?

since the semaster has not ended yet,and professors do not give out mid-semaster grades like teachers in high school, I do not know my current GPA. Is there a way I can find out?

You could probably ask your professors for a guesstimate of your final grades; you can explain to them that you're considering transferring and having an idea of how you're doing at Smith would help you in the application process. They've surely been asked before.

Anyway, yes, your SAT scores are pretty lousy but you know that already. If you have a great GPA at Smith, however, that may overshadow it all, especially since despite your poor test scores, you had a great rank and GPA in high school.

Don't sell yourself short -- your résumé is not "unimpressive". And certainly don't cheat yourself out of the opportunity of applying again to Tufts. You're only a stronger candidate than you were a year ago; and applying again just shows how much you REALLY want to go here. Good luck!

Actually, that's not true at all, RBAY (surprised you got that one wrong as you were a transfer yourself). The acceptance rate for transfers applying for admission this fall was approximately 10%. (http://admissions.tufts.edu/?pid=113) Tufts is actually known -- at least on the CC boards -- as being a hard bet for transfer students.

Nevertheless, Firstyr, I think you have a shot. Do apply but make sure you apply to some "safer" schools that you'd be just as happy at.

"Actually, that's not true at all, RBAY (surprised you got that one wrong as you were a transfer yourself)"

Me too, lol.

I just went on collegeboard.com. It seems to confirm that transferring here is significantly harder than I imagined. Their statistics say 90 out of 645 were admitted. So that's around 14% I think...

Geesh, I swear when I was transferring the rate was much much higher, I'm almost sure of it. Shoot, I transferred in 05' and I thought it was, at least on collegeboard, around 50%...46% I think to be exact. I mean, I wasn't even in the top 30% of my HS class and had done only 1 semester of work at my state school and was still admitted.

Shoot man, you might as well be applying to Georgetown, Cornell and UPENN as well because those places all have higher acceptance rates. In the case of Cornell its significantly higher.

What happened? Definately boosts my confidence about having gotten in here though

yea, I am aware of the low transfer acceptance rate at Tufts,, so I am really scared! But I am going to try again anyways! As for other schools, I am been considering brandeis (probably a higher transfer acceptance rate?also really good in science)and Northeastern for their pharmacy program ( would northeastern be my safety?). I haven't really thought about any other fit schools, because I am looking at a university in/near boston that is good at science...any other suggestions as to where I might apply? As a safety or what not?

Northeastern would be more than a safety. But I've always thought of transferring as a chance to go to a better than, or at least equivalent school, to the place you're transferring from. Smith is a better school than Northeastern -- IMO. How about places like BU, BC, etc. as your safeties?

What? Smith has got to be better than BU...BU isn't even in the top 60. Northeastern is a better school for the sciences than Smith. Way better, you guys need to stop hating on Northeastern...it's a technical school for the most part meaning the students there actually learn how to DO THINGS rather than just sitting around and writing poetry.

I wouldn't be depressed about being at Smith though. Shoot though, you missed out firstyr...I swear that when I was applying to Tufts just a few years ago they admitted around 50%, something in the range of 400-500 transfers a year. I wonder what changed?

The reason why people don't view northeastern in the same light is because it's viewed as a vocational school that touts its "co-op," which incidentally every year has a few people "interning" at hotdog stands at fenway and the copley mall. This is not to say that there aren't good jobs there for co-ops, but it's difficult to get the more prestigious ones and are usually limited to the top students (cherrypicking from the honors college).

RBAY - I assure you Tufts has never accepted 400-500 transfers a year; not even half of that number (I understand you're exaggerating for effect). When I was a freshman three years ago, my roommate and I were the only two non-transfers in a whole section of Lewis Hall. All those kids told me back then that the acceptance rate for transfers was 15%, so I'm guessing it's been at least that low for awhile -- including whenever you transferred, which must have been this year or last. It is 10% now, according to Tufts' admissions website.

"which incidentally every year has a few people "interning" at hotdog stands at fenway and the copley mall."

LMAO! You serious. I'll admit there are some dumbasses over there but I guarentee that none of them are majoring in Engineering or anything of the sort.

Yeah, if you're a Liberal Arts major at Northeastern you're probably a ****ing dumbass

"I understand you're exaggerating for effect"

What effect? You think I want to convince this girl to waste $75 on an application?

I'm telling you, I transferred in the spring and there were at least 100 people at orientation in spring of 05'. Swear it man, that number 400-500 used to be on the Tufts transfer page. I'm telling you, if there is anyway to get ahold of the 05' stats get at me.

I could've been haullucinating that whole time but I wouldn't lie about something so silly as this if I thought it weren't true.

guys, stop arguing please! The thread was created for ME, ME, ME! but thanks for all the help, lolabelle. I am at least a bit more confident in this whole process now!

rightbackatyou, why do you hate tufts that much? just coz it wasn't the right school for you doesn't mean that you have to put down the school for others. You know, reading your posts makes me sad, why did tufts accept someone like you, who obviously doesn't appreicate what the school has to give, over someone like me, who really wants to go there?

Why are you second guessing my opinion of my 2-year experience at Tufts? Have you even visited the campus yet, lol. I've had plenty of great things to say about the school if you look closely instead of just skimming for my witty and sarcastic remarks. Still, there are alot of things about the school I don't like, yes. But I would go here no doubt over almost every school in the country save a dozen or so if it wasn't $46,000 a year.

Anyways...

"why did tufts accept someone like you, who obviously doesn't appreicate what the school has to give, over someone like me, who really wants to go there?"

I don't know...maybe because I'm smarter and more attractive? These Muay Thai workouts I've been doing over the past few months give my entire frame the stature of something approximating a shimmering Greek God. I'm that dope, what can I say?

Nah, I'm sure you're prettier than I and more intelligent to boot. If you seriously want some tips that will help you get in PM me. I think when you get here you might be dissapointed though.
