Transferring as a Sophomore With Less Than Stellar HS stats

Hello!

I recently got denied from my first five choices (ouch!) and I'm starting my freshman year at CSULB. I haven't visited yet, so I'm not entirely sure if I'll end up disliking it, but I recently decided on majoring in Africana studies. When I tried to see how well CSULB did in Africana studies, I came upon a list of schools and after a bit of research, transferring became an option. I know this is jumping the gun a bit but after my freshman year, my mom has given me a lot more leeway in terms of where to apply - meaning, cost (which is a massive thing, I admit) is the only setback with these places. I've tried searching for details on transferring to each of these places with little to no avail. My HS GPA was not as good as it could have been because my school loaded me up with 10 classes my senior year (only 1 of which I needed to graduate, but that's another story for another day (: ) Basically, I'd like to know what I can do with a HS GPA of 3.18 and an SAT score of 1830. If I have an improved college GPA (which I will, promise), will it mean anything in light of my HS performance? Can I retake the SAT? Is there really no point to applying to transfer to schools with really competitive freshman admit rates? I just want to know so I can save some money, but I would also like to know early so I'm not regretting not taking the chance half way through the year.

If you transfer after your second full year, SAT and high school transcripts will not be taken into account. You have to look at their transfer admission rates, not the freshman rates as you will not be considered in the same pool as freshman applicants. However, take some time at CSULB before making the decision to transfer. You might like it there and it might be a better fit for your academics than other universities.

I did vary poorly in high school with a 2.7 gpa with a 1450 SAT and tried applying to schools that would accept me (1 denied me and 1 accepted me) anyway I did my freshmen year where they didn’t have what I wanted to major in (computer science) (I went due to family reasons) and I worked incredibly hard and got a 4.0 and applied to some big universities here in NY and got into Binghamton University and University at Buffalo…Point is if you work hard than you will probably get into many of the schools you would like if you decide to transfer since your HS gpa and SAT score is pretty good depending what schools you plan on transferring to
