Transferring as a Spring Admit

I only arrived at my college a few weeks ago, but I'm pretty sure it isn't what I want. I'm obviously going to stick out at least the semester to see if things change, but I think the campus is a too quiet for me. I need to be stimulated constantly, and there are no jobs/volunteer areas around, nothing really happening. No restaurants, concerts, interesting events. I don't know much about transferring but I'd like to keep my options open in case I decide to transfer. The problem is the spring admission: I've only been here for one semester, so I think to transfer for fall '10 I'd still be a freshman. I have enough AP credits to be considered a sophomore, but I'm not sure all colleges accept that. So:

If I transfer as a freshman, do I lose all credit that I've received this semester? I don't think I want to come back here after summer break, but I will if I have to.

Can I take classes at a community college for fall 2010 and then transfer somewhere else for the winter?

How does an academic leave of absence work? Can I apply to other colleges during the absence? I may be taking one, as I have been diagnosed with bipolarity. It seems like a lot to deal with besides being a freshman.

To recap, I'll definitely stick out the semester, but at the moment (things could change) I don't think I'll want to come back after summer break - I'm getting a fantastic academic education, but zero personal growth. Sorry if this is confusing, I tried to figure it out by myself and ended up running in circles.

Hi belle and welcome to CC!

You won’t lose credits just because you’re transferring as a fr. However the college you transfer to will determine how many of your credits they will accept and sometimes you will lose credits in the process, but that can happen whenever you transfer.

The problem really is that since you’ve just started at your current school and you have to apply immediately for fall 2010, the only record of your college work they will see before decisions are made is a mid-semester report. Which means that most of the decision will be based on your HS record and test scores. Also, getting LORs from your college profs will be difficult since they haven’t had much time to get to know you.

Yes, you can take CC classes next fall and transfer in the spring, although not all schools accept spring transfers.

You should talk to your current school to get the details about how a leave of absence works with them. Yes, you should be able to apply to other colleges while on leave.
