Transferring as Info Systems Major

Hi all, I'm looking to transfer from UC Riverside to CSULB.
My situation is very complex, the good

I originally transferred from community college( I love SMC)

I did the entire CSU GE Breadth pattern , and transferred with a 3.1( CSU) into UCR
68 units from SMC .

I only have 12k in debt , as of the end of this spring , I plan to take some time off and start paying that down
with a job( 3+ years experience in QA( testing software) and i've talked to a few recruiters who sound like they may be able to help me get a decent job this summer )

The bad

I'm a poli sci major, but after seeing that to even get a job with that degree I need grad school I'm deciding to take a different path .

I lack many of the pre-reqs for Info Systems, to get them out the way I'm going back to SMC for a while to take additional classes .

I had a bad winter quarter at UCR- luckily these units don't have as much weight as the ones from SMC, but still my SMC GPA is 3.1( 68 semester uniits) and my UCR GPA is 2.3(24 quarter Units-- like 18 semester units .

I wasted a year of my life out in Riverside and I miss my friends back in LA.

The Awesome
I've talked to recruiters that would hire me for high paying jobs if I had the Info Systems degree- we're talking 50k plus , one job had a pay of 55$ an hour, this one required alot of experience , but I want to aim for a high paying job .

If I get into CSULB I'll be able to fit in work so I can hopefully work my way though school- I know I might need more loans , but I really want to work hard enough that I can focus on paying down that 12k , instead of graduating with 30k+ in debt( this is my estimate of how much it would cost to finish up poli sci at UCR) .

I know this has been a very long rant, but I'd like to know how hard it would be to transfer as an Info Systems Major , in case CSULB doesn't accept me I'm willing to go to ether CSUN or CSULA
Thanks for your time

Hey!! I think what you’re doing is smart. Don’t worry about “the obstacles” (time lost, current debt, etc) you’ll come out of this a stronger person but do apply or fin aid if you have this option.

In fact, I’m kind of in the same boat as you. I went to community college to study political science then as soon as the economy began to plummet I got nervous and switched to math and transferred to UC Berkeley but even there I didn’t feel safe studying a relatively safer major (safer than poli sci, thats for sure) so I decided to apply to CSULB and got in for this Fall for Civil Engineering. Im stoked! I feel like I’m being given a second chance and I love how cheap the tuition is at CSULB relative to UC Berkeley.

We can do it!! Stay strong! : )

Like before the economy went to crap having any degree was worth it . But now thats not the case, I sure as heck don’t want to teach, so it makes more sense to transfer then do anything else at this point

All you can do is start taking the requirements and raise your GPA. Apply to several schools, including backups. Right now, your GPA is low for CSULB. They look at the combined GPA rather than several for different schools. It’s gotten a lot harder to get in with the decrease in funds and increase in applicants. There may also be an enrollment freeze for next year depending on whether or not the tax increase in CA is approved later this year. In short, work towards CSULB but apply to at least CSUN and CSULA as well.

Just did the math and my combined UCR , SMC GPA is 2.94
I’m totally fine with CSUN or CSULA( if it comes to this) , its going to be at least a year before I even apply to CSULB- UCR put a bad taste in my mouth as far as education is concerned .
I actually was admitted to CSULB as a poli sci major for last fall, but I dumbly assumed that a UC was a better school . Like I really just want to move back to LA- so as long as the school is in or within a 2 hour bus ride of LA I’m fine .

Hmm, if you never make any mistakes you never learn anything , so it is what it is
