Hey everyone!
I will be attending USC this Fall!! I started CC at 18 and messed up. Got my act together, blah blah blah. Now after five years I’m officially transferring! The thing is, I turn 23 in July so I will be a 23 year old transfer student. How much will this affect my USC experience? I know I shouldn’t feel down about this, but I am. I just don’t like that I will be 23 when I transfer and probably 25 or 26 when I graduate. I know transferring this late is my fault and I take full responsibility for that! I’m just afraid I’ll feel weird when most of my classmates are 20-21.
I once heard from a very friendly admission counselor that transfer applicants are his favorite applicants to review. The reason being, each profile he looks at is different and full of surprise. You’ve had downs in your life, like we all have, but that hasn’t stopped you from pursuing your education. Think about it, you’ll be a walking experience for the younger kids and have plenty to teach them! Admissions sees this and because of such, being 23 isn’t an issue at all for transfers. If anything, it might be a plus, depending on what you learned in that time.
If words of encouragement don’t suffice, then I should probably tell you that I know a few transfers in top schools that are in their 30’s and had problems with drug addictions, gang violence, etc… They turned a new leaf, kicked ass in community college and now are studying in the country’s best colleges. P.S: trust me on this one since we’re very similar in age, no one really gives a beep about your age in college. hahaha
I’m 10 years older than you and am transferring to a 4-year from CC. Just remember, you probably will not be the oldest person there. You’re still in the group of people who I refer to as “kids” when I talk about happenings at school to co-workers… But I also feel like anyone younger than me is essentially 12 years old. LOL
In all honesty, I feel like age doesn’t matter one bit. Unless you go around announcing how old you are, no one will know or care. Age really is just a number. Just try to be nice to others and you’ll be able to make friends easily.

Age doesn’t matter one bit, don’t let it bother you so much. I won’t graduate from University till I’m 24. As long as you get your degree that is all that matters. Age is nothing but a number. Good luck at University.
