Transferring back to Original College

Hi! So I started my college career as an English major at a college (BGSU in Ohio) that I chose primarily because I was uncertain about what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go. The next year, I transferred to another state school about 30 minutes away where I am paying over double the amount in tuition. I am an engineering major now, specifically environmental engineering, and I honestly don’t like it that much. I joined a sorority here and I don’t like the people or the vibe they give or how they treat other people. I am really feeling like I made a big mistake in transferring. Not only am I significantly more in debt than I would have been before, but I’m unhappy. I wish I had just done environmental science at my old college because I do not enjoy the engineering part. I cannot afford to stay at my current school and NOT be an engineering major though. Should I transfer back to my old college? I am nervous to do so because I would feel embarrassed and like I wasted a lot of time and money for nothing. I don’t want to seem like a quitter but I am not happy and am not sure what to do.

You are not a quitter. Do what makes sense to you, and especially what makes you happy. Don’t put yourself through hell and back just to end up miserable & in crippling debt. If you genuinely feel like you gave your new college and major a proper fair shot, and you tried hard at it only to still be unhappy, then it’s definitely not worth it. Try not to look at this as a mistake/failure. It was a learning experience, and it helped you identify what you enjoy and do not.

Lots of people transfer back to their original college/university! Don’t worry about that at all. You needed to try the different place and the specific major there. Now that you know what you want to study, and you know where you are happiest as a student, you are way ahead of most of the students at both of these universities!

Transfer back. Finish your degree. Get on with your life.
