I just am curious how easy it is to transfer between school. In my case to transfer from Arts & Sciences to Tepper. Also how easy is it to have two majors in different schools? Is this type of thing common?

Internal transfer into Tepper is usually the hardest, but it is a possibility if you meet the requirements. Typically when you want to transfer into another school, certain course(s) must be taken and passed, and then you will be considered. It basically comes down to space and grades. From what I've been told, very few students transfer out of Tepper; therefore, there never is much space which is why it is usually harder to transfer into. This isn't said as much for the other schools because a lot of students decide they no longer want to pursue their current majors and choose to transfer out. However, apparently with Tepper this isn't normally the case as I have said. Internal transfer is definitely common at the school though because even if students arrive with full intentions on sticking to one major, the complete diversity and committment to multiple areas creates persuasion to find and fulfill some other passion.

i thought scs was hardest

No.. some students find CS to be exceptionally difficult (or just end up not liking the material) and transfer out.. consequently, more room is made available for those interested in internal transfer. Not that there is by any means plenty of room with CS. With Tepper though it has been suggested that more students choose to stick to the major.

It seems that a lot of people who want to get into Tepper but get rejected initially take a spot in H&SS and then try to transfer into Tepper. Seriously, this doesn't work for most people. There is no shortcut, backdoor, easy way into Tepper. Unless you take a lot of business courses while enrolled in another school at CMU, and do well in them, you don't have much of a chance.

I don't think there's a lot of tendency for students to transfer into SCS, either. At CMU, if you want to do CS, you have to REALLY want it, love it and be committed to it, meaning you either enrolled in SCS to start with or shouldn't be doing CS at CMU. That being said, I'm sure some people do transfer into SCS, but even though a lot of people transfer out I don't think it's easy by any means.

That is correct, you shouldn't use HSS as a backdoor to Tepper. It is foolish to apply to any university as a major you have no interest in following or intend to transfer out of. Tepper is a very selective program.. and it all comes down to space/grades. However, if you CAN demonstrate the desire in the business classes (evidenced by the grades you receive), then the possibility is there.
No, it is definitely not easy to transfer. However, CMU in general, because of the diversity and committment to many areas, would rather a student end up with a degree in a concentration that best fits them.. that they find the most passion in.. and this isn't always realized at first by the entering freshman. Therefore, it is inevitably up to the student to find what is right for them, and work like hell to become part of it.

Yeah, after getting rejected from Tepper, I initially thought of using H&SS as a backdoor. After thinking it over, I think I'd probably settle in humanities if I got in anyway. Maybe do econ and psych together...
