Does anyone know how hard it is to transfer from one UC to another as a sophomore or junior? Dd just got into UCSC (yay!) but it’s not her first choice of UC. If she went there and decided to transfer to another one, assuming she kept her grades up, would that be possible? One of the problems with UCSC is that it doesn’t have her major. She also isn’t wild about its “hippy, tree-hugging, pot-smoking” rep!
She’s still waiting to hear from UCD and UCSD, both reaches. If she doesn’t get into either one, she may choose to go outside the UC system, since she got accepted to 3 other schools.

I'm pretty sure you can only transfer to any UC as a junior. And if Santa Cruz doesn't have her major, she should definitely go somewhere else. If she isn't accepted to San Diego or Davis, and still has her heart set on a UC, look into a community college near her first choice school. Many have guarenteed transfer programs to the UC. They're cheap, and a nice way to get GE out of the way, with a guarenteed diploma from her first choice.

It is very dificult to transfer within the UC system. The reason being that in the eyes of the UCs, all UCs offer an equally good education. If she has her heart set on a different UC than SC, she should probably go somewhere else first.

Our son, who is a second year @ UCSD, was told by his academic advisor there that it is relatively easy to transfer as a junior from there to UCSC, but more difficult the other direction. It depends on both your grades and the number of transfer applicants. The community colleges are a better choice if your Dd wants to ensure a transfer as a junior.

SC doesn't sound like a good fit, even for two years.

But, in answer to your question, it is extremely difficult to transfer from a UC into any other UC other than SC, R, and Merced. The transfer slots at the other campuses are planned for jc transfers. A jc is definitely the way to go if your D has her heart set on UC; some jc's have extremely high placement rates into B, LA and SD.

if double d can get a 3.3 after two years at a j.c she could get into davis easy... and shes got a pretty good shot at sd too..heck a 3.3 is a ucla gpa in jc.Go to a community college in la jolla... she'll get the social aspect (or lack there of) of ucsd and with hard work she'll be better off... transfer students have higher graduation rates and, on average, graduate earlier than 4 year students... and only pay about half as much!!!.... TRANSFERS RULE!

We've talked to her about the community college route but she's not interested. She feels she's worked way too hard to get into a 4-yr. college to consider that, and I don't blame her. So far, she's in at 2 state universities, U of Oregon (with a 3K/yr. scholarship), and UCSC. I think she has a fair chance at UCD because her school is considered "underperforming" and those points may balance out her low test scores. She also may get points for leadership, and having a mild learning disorder for which she couldn't get accomodations because of her high GPA. I guess we'll see!
