This was being discussed in another topic on this forum, but in order to not get off topic there, I decided to create a new topic.

My question is: if I took CCC classes at a community college before I graduated high school (about 25-30 units), am I able to transfer those classes when I apply to UCLA this year? I know there are many questions asked saying "Can I transfer to UC right after high school?" or "Can I transfer to UC in one year?", but I have spent the full two years at the CCC after graduating high school, and have completed the rest of the credits I need to bring me to junior standing (60+ units) during those two years.

Now, I'm receiving information that I won't be able to transfer the classes I took before graduating high school to UC. These were not AP classes or classes taken for credit/no credit, these were official CCC classes taken at the college level that do indeed appear on my official transcript. They were Japanese 1~4 (20 units), as well as English 101 (3 units) and History 11 (US History -- 3 units). The majority of my IGETC courses were taken after high school graduation.

So, is it true that I cannot use these courses to transfer? If so, what can I do now? If they choose to ignore those units, I will only have 34 or so units that I will be transferring... I hope this isn't true. I don't know why transfer students that have spent the full 2 years at a CCC AFTER HS graduation are still being punished for taking CCC courses while being enrolled in high school. If I still ended up spending 2 years at a CCC after graduating high school, why are the classes I took at the college while being in high school not being accepted? It's really frustrating. I hope I misunderstood the information and that this isn't true. Say it ain't so, Joe!

Theocmom, thank you for your reply. So, if the CCC courses I took are transferable to UCLA, then I can transfer those units, even if they were taken before high school graduation?

A member at this forum. I also found this info at the UC website:

“The University of California defines a transfer applicant as a student who has been a registered student in a regular term at a college, university or in college-level extension classes since graduating from high school. Summer session attended immediately following high school graduation is excluded in this determination. If you are a transfer applicant, you may not disregard your college record and apply for admission as a freshman.”

But, I think the above may apply only for high school students who think they can transfer to UCLA immediately after graduating simply because they finished ALL of their 60 units at the CCC before finishing high school. I only completed some of the units before graduating HS, but I’m still doing my full 2 years at the CCC after finishing high school.

All classes taken during high school count - don’t worry. The statement above just states you have to be enrolled full time for a semester.

I know of a case where someone took CCC classes in highschool and got in as a Freshman, and another where someone took CCC classes in highschool and was a 1 year transfer. In both cases, the CCC classes transferred and counted just as they are listed on Assist.

Rpicton, thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it. Everything makes a lot more sense now. I was a little freaked out this morning, but after reading your comments I’m feeling very relieved. Thank you! :)

Iambeowulf710, I felt the same way, LOL! :D

Yes, we’re all fine. Since we’re students transferring from a community college, we’re fine. As long as the college courses we took are UC transferable, we’re able to transfer them to any UC we’d like – whether they were taken before or after high school graduation.
