This is actually a special case of a general transfer credit issue that students need to be aware of.
Example, student has credit from AP, IB, A-level, CLEP scores and courses completed at College-A. These are accepted for transfer credit at College-B where the student is now enrolled. Now student transfers to College-C. College-C will re-evaluate all AP, IB, A-level, CLEP scores and College A courses (as well as College-B courses) according to its own transfer credit policies, without regard to how College-B accepted AP, IB, CLEP scores and College-A courses.
Therefore, students considering transfer need to check how their transfer target college will accept all of their previous credit directly from the sources of that credit, rather than through an intermediary college that previously accepted that credit.
This also is a situation where formal articulation agreements between community colleges and 4-year institutions can come into play. If the articulation agreement is something like “complete your full associates degree and we won’t require any gen ed classes” or “complete requirements for the major as defined by the CC and we will let you go straight into junior level courses in that major”, then CLEP, AP, IB, etc. scores that wouldn’t normally be applicable to the new degree program would still fulfill specific requirements and could land on the transcript for those purposes. For example, Happykid’s CLEP language credits were accepted as part of the full AA that covered her gen eds when she transferred and show up as XX credits in liberal arts on her state U transcript. They do not appear as XX credits in foreign language.
