Hello. I got a scholarship to NYIT, and being excited about it, I stupidly didn't do my research on it. Now I'm not going to be attending it, and probably will be going to another college in the spring because its probably too late now, and I don't want to feel pressured. What a shame, had an AP credit to be ahead too. Anyways, I got about 12k in aid. Now, I'm planning on dropping admissions to NYIT, and switching to CCNY Grove School of Engineering. That was my first CUNY Choice, and the FAFSA should cover the tuition :). However, how do I proceed changing to have fafsa for spring term for that school. Will I lose any aid, do I have to request to cancel the aid and make a new one for CCNY? Any help would be appreciated :)

Have you applied to CCNY?
If you already applied and were accepted, have to notified them you will be attending?

You need to talk to the financial aid office of CCNY Grove and get specific directions for that. Did you list them for the FAFSA? You should go to the FAFSA site and add them as an additional school to get the info along with any other such schools in consideration. The same FAFSA is used for the academic year including Spring 2015 wiht the fall 2014 term.

Bear in mind that FAFSA is just the form. It gives you no money. It gives you an EFC that tells you how much you are expected to pay before getting any federal aid. That EFC will remain the same for CUNY as it did for NYIt, but NOT the aid package that NYIT offered you. That was their aid package based on THEIR costs.

So look up what your EFC is. Other than PELL, you are not going to get more money in most cases than what that EFC is. You can borrow up to $5500 ($3500 of it subsidized) your freshman year and that amount can fully be used in the spring semester and sometimes summer. You need to think ahead about summer if that is a possibility. Because CUNY costs less than NYIT, you may not be getting the same dollar amount that you have on that financial aid offer from NYIT. The cost of attendance of schools plays a role in what you can get too.

FOr starters, know what your FAFSA EFC is. That is what you likely have to pay before you get any money (you can borrow the unsubsidized $5500 Direct loan, but not get any subisidy if you don’t have demonstrated need). But do call the financial aid office as well to get precise directions on what you should do to get your entitlements. And they will need a copy of that FAFSA before you get any money directed from the government towards your costs there. YOU don’t get any money until the school gets theirs first. Money goes to the school’s bursar’s office, and is applied to their direct billed items. Any thing leftover may go to you according to the individual school’s specific rules.

Thanks for the replies! I’ll get back to you guys as quick as I can

MY EFC is 0, Pell grant of 5,730. I had them listed on my FAFSA already, the first school on the list, which was requested when I applied to a bunch of colleges months back. I will get in touch with the financial aid office and get back to you guys!
