Transferring "down" - silly or sane?

As my other posts detail, I'm a freshman at NYU applying to transfer out. I'm considering applying to my state school as a back up. As NYU is an upper-tier school, I almost feel silly considering a transfer to state school. However, it has an honors college, among other attributes that I find lacking here.

Has anyone else, or is anyone else considering transferring "down", so to speak?

I'm curious to hear people's thoughts on this.

At the end of that day, it shouldn’t matter if the college is top-tier or not. As long as you are learning it shouldn’t matter.

If it’s a better academic or financial fit, there’s nothing wrong with it.

I agree with the others. If you’ll be happier there, there’s nothing silly about transfering to a state school.

may i ask why you want to transfer out of NYU?

Better to get out now than be stuck in later. If you are 100 percent positive you wont have regrets, do it. Just don’t look back 30 years later when youre broke on ur ass working a minimum wage job reminiscing about how you made the mistake of transferring down. :)

My son transferred “down” like you are considering from a well regarded private school to a SUNY school. For him, it was a good decision. The people he has met since transferring are much more down to earth and he is happier overall.

It’s good to hear reassurance about this issue. It’s true: at the end of the day, a college’s rank shouldn’t trump my own well-being.

@Manayy:
Basically, I realized that while I like New York City, I wanted to spend my undergraduate years at a smaller place in a more traditional college setting. NYU feels too large, too impersonal, and too scattered for a cohesive undergraduate experience.

I go to a highly rated LAC, and am toying with the idea of transferring down a less prestigious LAC. My sister goes there, and it’s closer to home. If it’s is the only school I get into, I’ll consider staying at Midd, but I want to have the option. It’s hard to know how I’ll feel about my current school a few months from now, so I figure, why not?
