So I already basically asked the same question on the transfer forum, but I didn't really get applicable answers since most art schools don't use the common app.
I originally enrolled in Dickinson college (small LAC) but did very poorly my first semester due because my mom was sick, and getting worse. She died at the beginning of my second semester, which I withdrew from. I also ended up withdrawing from my third attempted semester. Now I'm at my local cc and so far have a 4.0. (hoping to keep it that way lol). I'm planning on applying to several art schools for illustration for Fall 2011.
I was just wondering where on the app I could explain the situation with my first 1 1/2 years of college. or if they would even care? And if there is nowhere on the apps than should i just send and extra letter?

Thank you!

Can you talk about it in your essay? Perhaps you can call the admissions office of the schools you apply to after your application is complete. I think they would be completely understanding of the situation.

I understand what you went through. I had a similar situation my 1st 2 years of college. I managed to get by, but it wasn’t pretty, and at one point I was put on academic probation.

Thanks for the advice :). I’ve thought about explaining the situation in my essay, but i wonder if that would come off as whiney? I’d rather use the essay to show them who I am rather than explain past incidences. I thing you’re right, I’ll probably call or e-mail once it comes to it. I get too stressed out about these things lol.

I think you should call an admissions officer, set up a visit if possible, and ask them. Best of luck to you!

If you could put a positive spin on it, it may not appear whiny. But if you are not comfortable with that, then speak to an admissions officer.
