I got admitted into NYU under the liberal studies core, but am expected to spend my first year in Italy. If I apply to change my first year site to Ny, but stay in the same program, what are the odds that they satisfy the request? Also how do they decide whether or not they should satisfy it?
My daughter enquired about this last year - they said you have to have a really compelling reason, and they only look at these requests in May or June once they have all the final admits in and can see if there is even space. So apply, but I really wouldn’t expect it to happen unless you have a really compelling reason that you have to be in NY and there is space for you.
Hmm. Define “compelling”
I would bring up COVID-19 if I were you. It is crazy in Italy, and it’s going to settle down very slowly. Tell them that as your first year as a college student, that you do not feel comfortable studying in a situation like this.
Planning to do that because it’s true. Would make sense for me to get the NYU campus because I live in New York and don’t have to fly either. I’m hoping that would work if they have space.
@Knickyankeefan I would be wary of saying it was COVID-19 because of the fact that the situation is not particularly different in NYC. Maybe just write a compelling story about why what you want to study is particular to being in NYC, rather than being like “oh, I just don’t want to fly to Italy” as that sounds a bit whiny…not that you are, just the way it comes across…you know?
@brightplaces That’s an interesting perspective.
Thanks for it.
I think I might be able to talk about how NY gives my data science interest more opportunities. I wrote a pretty compelling supplement on why I want to get into that field in the first place for somewhere else. I might be able to work off of that. I feel like I won’t be the only one worried enough about covid to request a transfer too.
@Knickyankeefan Sounds like a plan! Good luck! Also, some kids turn down spots at the program in NYC, I did last year because of financial issues, so they are always moving things around!
Hi! I also applied for a first year site transfer from Italy to New York about a week ago. For some reason, I couldn’t find any helpful information online. In my site change request I sited my reasons as financial strains due to significant loss of income (bc of COVID-19) and just general mental health because I wouldn’t be able to enjoy myself in Florence while my family struggles at home (I’m from LA). Does anyone know if we have priority access to spots in NY over waitlist admits? and are we still required to pay the enrollment deposit even though we are unsure of what site we will be at?
Not sure about the waitlist. The women on the phone said that the decision comes after may 1st, so we need to commit. I wonder how many they even send abroad? Would they be able to accommodate us all in NY if international travel s is tricky? (Thinking a similar to a higher yield rate than expected situation. 3 in one room, some now empty hotels rented, etc)
What is the result? I am facing the same situation now where I am expected to start my freshman in Washington D.C and I am also wondering with the “compelling” reason. I wanted to mention that NYC has a larger LGGT population where those are the people I feel more comfortable living with. And also, should I also mention that D.C is more like a political center where NYC is a more multicultural center so I have more opportunities to meet with those people from all over the world since my intended future major is sociology.

Trying to make the case that DC isn’t multicultural enough for a future soc major is daft.
Trying to make the case that there aren’t enough LGBT people in DC for you to be comfortable is equally daft.
What is your actual reason for wanting to change campuses?
