Transferring for Fall 2019

Hello everyone!
I made a discussion board on here because I did not find one (did not really look either). Although I am a community college student, I am definitely stoked to hear from anyone who is trying to transfer to Swarthmore for Fall '19 ( :

Some stats and basic info about myself:
• Major: Physics is my first choice and Mathematics is my second choice.
• 3.67 GPA
• Dean’s List
• I did not take the SAT or ACT
• I am a co-founder and VP of Operations for a 501(c)3 non-profit org. my friends and I founded when we were ~16
• Aerospace Engineering intern at Caltech (started in Oct and have been studying the basics to prep for the project I’ll be
working on starting Jan.)
• Kind of a TA for an Intro. to Gen. - Chem course at my CC (official term is “S.I. Leader” (paid job)

I am not terribly far in the application process. I have a draft for the first essay and am working on the second one ( : I am also waiting hear back from one of the students listed in the “Ask a Transfer Swattie”. Hope to hear from y’all!

I’m applying to Swarthmore as a community college student as well!

It’s hard finding discussions/blogs about CC students transferring to LACs. I’m from California so almost everyone at my community college is aiming for the UC system, so finding information about applying to small out of states schools has been quite the task

Some of my info:
-Major: Psychology, but neuroscience is my second choice
-3.6 college GPA
-I took a summer course at UC Berkeley which boosts my gpa a little
-(trying to be) Involved on campus: psych club, photography club, biology club
-Internship at Stanford University medical center for about a year. Currently applying for internships/research positions in psych/neuroscience labs that are relevant for my major
-Completed Swarthmore alumni interview
-Applied to 5 UCs and finishing up some Common Applications for private LACs

I know the Swarthmore app is due extremely soon so I may be too late to this thread, but it’s still cool to see other community college students applying! Good luck!

Has anyone had issues with the receipt of their documents? Some of mine weren’t checked off, so I contacted Swat and they said if it’s not checked off then they haven’t received it. I find this hard to believe because one of the documents that is missing was sent in the same envelope as one of the documents that was marked as received. Also, plenty of schools update their portals weeks after they receive items. I kinda feel like they didn’t check. Oh well, I had digital copies sent ASAP, and they said it’s no problem

I’m currently a political science major & first-year at a T40.

High School GPA: 3.85 UW/4.28 W (doesn’t rank but probably top 12%)

ACT: 33 (didn’t send though)
Current College GPA: 4.0
High school ECs: mock trial captain, big mock trial awards, founded non-profit, debate, some really good leadership positions/did important things with these positions, some other stuff

College ECs: 2 leadership positions in student government, 20 hr/week internship last semester, still running non-profit (just not as physically involved due to change of location)

Interview: I did compelete a Swat interview. It went well, and our personalisties clicked, but not that many questions were asked as usual, so it was certainly the shortest college interview I’ve ever had. Because of this, it wasn’t my best interview, but there was nothing negative about it. Over all, it went well!

Essays: They weren’t the best I’ve ever written, but I think they’re good enough for admission

LORs: Should be good. Have high As in the classes of the professors I’m asking for LORs from. One of the knows me really well because of my research interests and I participate a lot in the other class

Best of luck to everyone else!

That’s disappointing your interview was so short! I did an interview with Reed College and it was literally 25 minutes. She probably asked me two academic questions, the rest was fluff about my hobbies etc.

My interview with Swarthmore went great though, I’m glad I instantly clicked with the alumni. He wasn’t constantly checking the time, and our interview lasted a little over an hour. He mentioned something about having to write a report at the end that interviewers submit to admissions… so hopefully he thought it went well too :stuck_out_tongue:

Good luck to you!!

Hey, does anyone have an idea of when admissions decisions will start coming out? The website just says by mid-May so I have no idea lol thanks!

I’m guessing roughly May 15. Most LACs seem to be notifying on that date.

@src9889

Dang that’s so late haha well thanks @lizzzzzz

I’m kind of late to this thread but I’ll post my stats anyways. I’m also a community college student so it’s cool to see others applying.

Major: Economics
College GPA: 3.8, should be closer to 3.9 by the end of the semester.
Extracurriculars: Social Media Manager for a local campaign finance reform organization. Internship with governor’s campaign. Also worked roughly 18 hours per week for the majority of my time at CC.
Deans List, Honors College.

I think my essays were great but then again I’m probably biased. Letters of rec should be decent. I didn’t interview which I really wish I would’ve but too late now.

I’m mainly worried about my high school grades which were pretty low but I really turned myself around in CC so hopefully that’s seen as a good thing. Also somehow my high school report was lost in the mail so that was sent in a couple days late. yikes

Anyways, good luck everybody. Hopefully we hear back soon because the wait is painful haha

Hi @Ashtash !!!

@Ashtash If we’re both admitted, we can both be on the debate and mock trial team together! Those along with student government are my chosen extracurriculars.

We’re similar in this regard. Are you wanting to become a lawyer?

@ARousseau true(: No, I don’t plan on going to law school. I just love mock trial(:

@Ashtash and you’re a political science major? So, what is your long-term career plan? Everything says lawyer to me, haha!

@ARousseau Haha, I know right! I’d like to work in consulting. What about you?

Oh, that’s a great choice for a career, I think. Smart move!

I want to be an IP Lawyer, so that’s why I was wondering if you were thinking of going in a similar direction.

Did you all get the email? Decisions come out May 14 at 7pm!
