Hey everyone,

I am a second-year student at Kent State University in Kent, OH and I am considering transferring to the University of Cincinnati. I am about to complete my fourth semester at KSU and am wondering if it is worth it to transfer after being here two years already. Here's what's going down:

I'm double-majoring in Sociology and Classics with a pre-law minor. Law school is my end goal. KSU is not known for Sociology or Classics and, unfortunately, has very small departments for both (I think the Classics department is literally only three or four professors for undergrad classes.) Social Sciences are just not very strong at KSU. Not at all.

I learned that UC has one of the best Classics departments in the country and this certainly attracts me to the school.

I currently receive next to nothing in financial aid from KSU, despite my high level of involvement, my 3.9 GPA, and the relatively low income of my family (I've had to borrow money for literally every single penny of my education costs.) I'm still waiting on a financial award letter UC which might provide me with more money.

My family and close friends are from Dayton, OH, which is maybe an hour or so from Cincinnati. I would like to be closer to home (Kent is about four hours away, near Cleveland.)

I would much rather attend an urban school. Also, the city of Kent seems to be, well, dying, just like the rest of Northeast Ohio. Cincinnati seems more... exciting. It's certainly a bigger and more well-known city, and I'm already incredibly bored with Kent. The coffee shop literally across the street from campus is closing down because business is so bad here.

UC seems more prestigious than KSU, by a long shot. The endowment is about ten times more (for the same number of students.) This is probably not the best way to judge a school, but it still does have an impact on my decision. I want to be proud of my degree.

I feel as if I won't be proud of a degree from Kent State. It's just.. I've been here two years already, don't feel challenged and find the academic quality to be lacking. It seems they are more interested in just passing students than sincerely having us learn anything.

Also, I absolutely cannot stand the weather here. It's literally cloudy 86% of the days, it's freezing, it's always raining or snowing, and it's extremely windy year-round. SW Ohio is not like this!

Basically, I just don't know if it would be advantageous for me to transfer after two years already at Kent State. Sure, I've made a few friends here at Kent I would hate to lose, but I can't put them above my education and future, and really, I'm still closer with my friends back home in the "Daytonatti" area, despite having been separated for two years.

One of the reasons I came here in the first place was for the Archaeology program, which I am no longer doing, and I was persuaded by the events of May 4th, 1970. I enjoy being politically-active and involved with social justice, social change, political change -social movements in general. I thought I'd find that at KSU but have only been mostly disappointed. I'm sure UC will be no better because apathy is just a generational problem not specific to this school. But I realize now that no one really cares about May 4th, 1970 anymore, and it was a very silly reason to choose this school.

I did come also because it's a more liberal area. SW Ohio is very conservative, where I'm from, and NE is very liberal. As such, I've been involved with local politics here -something that I probably will not be able to do with as much ease in Cincinnati.

I'm sorry for burdening anyone with so much information, but this really is a huge decision I have to make, and I just need some guidance. I can't talk to advisors at either school because they will obviously persuade me to attend their respective school.

I need some unbiased help here!

(BTW, I'm trying to prepare myself to get into Berkeley Law School. It's practically my dream in life... or maybe a better school even than that. I don't want to settle for a law school in Ohio and those are the only law schools that KSU graduates make it into.)

Prestige is very important to me, and regardless of how we can subjectively measure it, I view UC to be a more prestigious school than KSU.

So... advice? I'm so confused...

:(
