After completing my high school in the Netherlands, I decided I wanted to study in the US. However, the educational systems in the Netherlands and the US are very different. In the Netherlands its uncommon to aim for an A, we dont work with class rank and school offers very little extracurricular activities. At a Dutch High School we have three different levels/departments where students are put in; Mavo (4 years - easy - around 40% of the students), HAVO (5 years - normal - around 40% of the students) and VWO (6 years - hard - around 20% of the students). Only with a VWO-degree a Dutch student is eligible to go any university in the Netherlands. (You might say that a VWO-degree replaces the admission procedure known in the US). However because a VWO-degree alone is enough for university-admission, there is a six-culture (B-culture) in the Netherlands, which means that a grade 6 (6 out of 10) is good enough, and sadly I got sucked in to this culture.

Eventually, even with -for American standards- bad grades I decided I wanted to go to the US.

I took the SATs (1770, math+cr: 1200) and I started taking online classes from Stanford (Game Theory) and Yale (Political Philosophy), and got more and more excited to be challenged to think different.

After I found a university which best matched my budget +- $35000 (knowing that a lot of public universities were too expensive and a private university would not give me a scholarship), Ill be an international undergraduate freshman at Ohio University this fall. (College of Business - Undecided)

However as an ambitious student I still want to find out as soon as possible if I can transfer to a top-university eventually so that I can work towards that goal at Ohio U.

I understand that transferring to a top university means a lot of hard work at Ohio U the first two years to compensate my high school grades, and Ill need a good essay that really shows that I am different/passionated and that I have a real reason for transferring. But I am just very curious if there are people who managed this incredible feat.

So my questions is: Are there any other (international) transfer students who transferred from a banal university to a top university with unimpressive high school grades?
