Hey all,

I didn't do so well in HS-- 3.0 gpa, average SATs, some honors courses, 2 APs (I graduated a year early or else I would be stacked with APs).
Anyway, I am going to college for a year and then am hoping to be admitted to GWU as a transfer.

The question is: since my school (Hunter College) isn't a Tier 1 school, would it make any difference to just transfer from a CC? I ask because either commuting or renting an apt would cost some serious money whereas my local CC is a 5 minute drive from home.

Also, I know that GWU doesn't look at your SATs/HS transcripts if you have received at least 30 college credits, but does this mean you must've received them at the time you apply?
If I want to apply as a sophomore transfer, when should I send in my application?

GWU doesn’t care where you are transferring from; what really matters is your GPA, letter(s) of recommendation, and your courses taken.

I was accepted to GWU for transfer admission next year and am transferring from the branch campus of a state school. This branch is open enrollment and essentially a community college with a state school name; I was amongst the first batch of applicants to be notified that I was accepted to GWU (at least here on CC) and received almost a full-ride from them. It seems that attending your local community college will best fit you. I suggest enrolling in it, taking a full course-load, and trying your best to achieve a 4.0 (I should note that a 4.0 isn’t necessary but will defiantly help make up for any portions of your application that you may think are “weak”).

GWU is an utterly fantastic school in the capital of our country. For whatever it’s worth, the Princeton Review recently ranked GWU’s students as being amongst the happiest in the country.

Good luck!

Honus123,

Thanks for your post! If you wouldn’t mind, could you maybe share what your GPA was?
I’m going to take a liberal-arts-type courseload-- history, math, foreign language(I hope 2 FLs because they are my passion lol).

I visited GWU last summer and was in love with it and DC as a whole! :)

I had a 4.0 for my first two quarters and will have one for my final quarter (though it doesn’t really matter since I have already been granted admission).

A liberal art-based curriculum would be the ideal way to schedule your classes (this is what I did). This will hopefully ensure that many of the credits will transfer successfully; I’d advise against taking any very specific courses as GWU may not have something comparable and you would not receive credits for them.
