Transferring from a CC (some questions)

Hello all, posted this in the Transfer section but figured I'd get more direct answers here.

I had a bit of a rocky start at my community college (Northern Virginia Community College - NVCC), which is reflected in my transcript. At first I started off wanting to do Engineering, and transfer out to Virginia Tech. The results of that disastrous semester are evident in the transcript below. Instead of getting too dejected I decided to switch fully into Business and dare to try for UVA instead. My plan right now is to apply for McIntire at UVA, with either Economics at UVA (School of Arts & Sciences) or Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech as backups.

Questions:

1) Will Fall 2006 haunt me the rest of my life?

2) Should I be taking a more challenging courseload for Fall 2007? The current classes are just to finish out my Associates degree (mandatory Physical Education, Student Development classes, etc.)

3) If I'm not in Engineering anymore, is it worth it for me to retake Electric Circuits I? Or am I just torturing myself for no reason.

4) Should I retake the SATs? Last time I took it they were still on the 1600 scale (I scored a 1450).

5) Any other advice about where to go from here?

Thanks in advance :)

P.S. - The English credits are from a 4 on AP Lang. & Comp. and a 5 on AP Lit. & Comp. Does this mean I need to take English still for credit at UVA?

1) That semester won't kill you, especially since you've improved greatly since. Plus, a lot of people get to engineering, and either hate it, hate the work, or can't handle the work, and switch out. However, it obviously does hinder your cume. GPA, and it's not like they will completely disregard it.

2) If you need those types of courses, by all means take them to get your Assoc Degree (see #5 for why). For whatever open credits you have left, take pre-reqs for either VT or UVA (look around online for those...and for why, again, see #5)

3) No. Don't take that class, especially if you did horrible the first time. Take a business/pre-req class.

4) No, 1450 is a great score.

5) Both UVA and VT have an agreement with VCCS for transfer students after the complete 60 hours of credit (C or better will transfer..so the F won't transfer, but you have a slather of summer credits that will help). As long as you have a 4.0 and have completed the reqs, it's an auto-in to CLAS for UVA (if you want to study economics...it's in the CLAS). Look around UVA's transfer site for the reqs. Same for VT. So, I would suggest for UVA to apply to McIntire, but state that if you can't get in, then you wish to be considered for CLAS.
So, keep up the GPA above a 3.4! Minimum! But, get that Assoc. degree.

You will still have a pretty good shot, despite your bad semester. I wanted to point out that arts & sciences majors (economics, mathematics, etc) at UVA can do as well in the job search as business majors. However, if you would prefer the Commerce school, go for it. Arts & sciences majors at UVA will have more opportunities in their job search than business majors at Virginia Tech. You should have VT as a distant safety to UVA Commerce school or arts & sciences.

It would be a major relief not to have to take Electric Circuits again- I just don't know how badly that would reflect on my application (getting an F in it and then not retaking it, even though it is outside my major now). I really, really, really do not want to go through that again, though it would be the single biggest boost to my GPA.

Wow thread-starter, you and I are practically the same in our ambitions and regrets.

Do you go to annandale?

Yep (Annandale).

I was wondering, also, if someone could expound upon what cavalier302 said about Economics at UVA vs. Pamplin at Va Tech? That's one of the major decisions I'm going to have to make if I don't get into McIntire.

The job recruiting at UVA is simply better, tko2. There are entire industries that don't even really recruit at VT - industries that UVA comm school kids almost exclusively shoot for. There shouldn't be any decisionmaking process unless you have a REALLY hot significant other at VT ;) . You can IM me @ cavalier302 if you want to discuss it further.

Well, UVA is more regarded in all fields, whereas VT is still majorly recruited only in engineering. Not to say Pamplin is worse, but I vote UVA is better. Cav is right: companies will be on grounds recruiting from McIntire, and those are going to be the top-notch companies on the face of this earth. but there isn't that much of a recruiting hook at VT. Why be at VT fighting other business students for jobs when you can practically have the companies walk right through your front door?

tko, I attend annandale campus as well as I live in Fairfax.

If you're taking the mythology class with Prof Noell, let me just say that her lectures are spectacular and her knowledge of myth quite extensive (she's writing a textbook on the subject which, in manuscript form, is one of the main texts for the class). In short, it's an excellent class but you will not receive an A easily.

Fun class though.

Hey tko2,

I just got word from the transfer admissions counselor today on this very subject. As UVA does not give credit for 4's anymore (which is fairly common knowledge), you will need to take at least one English class to check that box.

I received a 4 on my Lang & Comp exam, was waived from 111 to 112 at my California junior college as a result, and then aced 112... but I was told by the aforementioned transfer officer that I would indeed need to take a 2nd English class, in the form of ENG 210 (advanced comp.).

You will need to call yourself to get specifics about your situation. The number is 434.982.3200

All the VA public schools (or almost all of them) have a guaranteed transfer agreement with the VA community colleges. UVA's School of Arts and Sciences has one: http://www.vccs.edu/Portals/0/ContentAreas/AcademicServices/VCCS_UVA.pdf

I just skimmed over your stats and the required courses, and it looks like you're missing a few. I don't know if you can still fulfill all the requirements, since you're already in your second year of comm college... but you should most definitely look into this.

EDIT: I just realized shoebox already mentioned this agreement... oh well lol

I fulfill that agreement except for two points - I'm getting my Associates in Business Administration, not in Arts/Sciences/General, and I did fail a course in Fall 2006. Other than that, I have all the specific course requirements, etc.

If I retake Circuits & pass, do I still not meet the "Earns a C or better in every VCCS course taken" ?

Having done a bit more research, I need to warn you about 2 red flags:

English 111, and English 112.

You must have earned a 5 on the AP Language exam for credit - it's the only score they still award credit for - and you only received a 4.

You will, however, get credit for your 5 on the AP Lit exam - they take 4's and 5's for that test - but you get this credited as ENLT 249, which is the Intro to Literary Criticism class. I am almost 100% sure that this covers neither of the 2 writing requirements.

A 5 on the Language exam gives you credit for ENWR 110 at UVA, which is and accelerated class encompassing both ENWR 105 & 106, which are the ENG 111 & 112 classes at any VCC. You should absolutely call and ask the transfer counselor to give you a solid on this. But theoretically, you may still need not just one but two English classes.
