Hi, I’m just wondering what are my chances of getting in. I’m currently attending Nassau Community College and went to a High School overseas. I really want to get in as this has been my dream school. My GPA in high school was 3.3 with a TON of E.C’s. My current GPA is 3.9 (with 45 credits done…going to do 15 this spring). I took very challenging classes (Inorganic chemistry I & II, Bio 1 & 2, Calculus 1&2, Organic Chemistry 1, Econ, etc). I am part of PTK honors society, Make a difference club, The Transfer Club, and I volunteer at a hospital every weekend. I’m not submitting my SAT scores (Absolutely dismal). My Recommendations & essays are amazing. I just want to know if I have what it takes to be accepted into such an amazing institution such as Amherst college. Please let me know!

Your gonna get in!

I’m not quite so optimistic, but I do think you have a chance, esp if you build a compelling case for your maturity, and show your strong work ethic. If you went to CC because you are economically disadvantaged, rather than slacking, that is the key point.

I definitely did let it be known that I am mature in my essays and such. That’s exactly why I went to community college (because of financial issues). I really hope I get in! This has been my dream school, and since the day I stepped foot on my school’s campus I had planned to get there. I really hope they give me a chance. I hope my High school grades will not be to my detriment…

You will most likely get in!

I really hope so. I worked really hard for this! Let’s hope that the admissions committee sees me fit for such a prestigious opportunity; being accepted into AMHERST COLLEGE!

I’m afraid that w/o test scores, they may think you can’t do the work. Amherst is a lot more difficult than a community college. Make sure all your correspondence and essays are perfect. Don’t use any txt type talk. I’m not sure…

Of course I wouldn’t use any text type talk… I’m not an idiot, lol. I have been stalking their website, and it is more recommended for 4 year students. About 60% of transfer students come from community colleges. I’m sure it’s a lot more difficult than my current institution, that’s why I want to go. I can get a great education for a good price (Parents make <50,000). crosses fingers

good luck man, you look good!

I was wondering, what are the transfer acceptance rates and does that number include cc transfers? What’s the number not including cc transfers?

I am hoping you’ll get in. Please don’t take offense at advise, kindly meant.

I read somewhere recently - can’t recall where exactly- that there were about 169 applicants, and 22 were accepted (this number included cc transfer and others). About 13 were cc kids. I don’t know how reliable the source was, but it seems around the average amount of acceptances.

@oldbatesieDoc Haha, I wasn’t offended man. Thanks for the optimism. I need it right about now. I put my all into my application, and I hope it shows.

Amherst is a dream school for lot of people and a reach for most - you must be realistic. Admissions to schools like this is not about fairness - it’s about whether they think you have something to offer them. We visited and and felt it was not a good fit and Amherst was the only school we visited that did not bombard us with papers. However, my D did receive a targeted letter because she had won a writing contest. Without high scores, you are probably at a disadvantage - but you never know - you may fill a niche for them. Good luck!

I want to say that you have a good chance of getting in. Amherst is looking to accept a lot more community college transfers in the coming years and your current GPA looks good.

When did Amherst go SAT optional? Good luck but be aware that many students with 2100+ SATs, higher GPAs and rank and better ECs are not getting in. It is a very competitive school with a low acceptance rate. I would have other more realistic options lined up.

^Transfer candidate from a cc - haven’t explored the specs, but would proffer that SATs may not be required from transfer candidates, or perhaps optional for that group?

^ that’s right, the SATs are optional for transfer students only.

Also, let us know if you get in. I also applied for Fall 2012 transfer to Amherst, maybe we’ll both make it fingers crossed ;)
