I have the opportunity of being president of my community college’s Diversity club, which is a great opportunity either way, but I’m wondering if it will really even be that big of a help in transferring? Will it be passed off by admissions at a 4-year since it’s just a community college club? I plan on applying to my state university’s honors program, will it help in getting in to the honors program?
Thanks!
Ask the transfer office at your state u and also ask the honors college - they may have very specific requirements that we on CC do not know. I would think a leadership role at your community college will benefit you if there are activities that you undertake. Congrats and good luck with reaching your goals!
Thank you, I appreciate it! I have an appointment with a transfer specialist at the university so I definitely plan on asking them.
There’s really no difference between clubs at universities or clubs that are “just community college clubs.” All it is is people with similar interests getting together for purposes of increased knowledge, activism, etc.
Will it help? Yes, but it’s not going to make a huge difference either way. College EC’s for transfer students aren’t seen as quite as important as EC’s for high school students. Yes, it’s certainly important to be involved in the campus. Having substantive things to put in the EC section is obviously much better than leaving it blank. However, heavy EC performance in high school can often compensate for somewhat less than perfect academics. It doesn’t really work that way for transferring. They’re evaluating your academic performance over anything else.
