Transferring from a LAC to Art School?

Hi, I currently attend a Top 5 LAC, but I am looking to transfer for the next fall semester. While I'm looking up other schools I'd like to apply to, I've started considering art schools... Art is something that's always been a hobby of mine, and it's always something I've been a little more than average at, but I never had the time or opportunity to really pursue... But I've always been interested in maybe pursuing a career in architecture, interior design, industrial design, commerical/graphic design, etc... However, I'm a total newbie when it comes to applying to art schools and creating a portfolio and such, and I don't have any works really to build a portfolio this instant (I'd have to crack down on making some stuff if I decide to go ahead and apply to some art institutions).

Would it be a foolish idea for me to transfer from a LAC to an art school when I have no background in art whatsoever? Would it even be possible for me to transfer from a LAC to an art school? What are the basics I should know about transferring to an art school? Any information or insight regarding my situation would be greatly appreciated.

I'm mostly interested in Parsons and Pratt, by the way.

Thanks.

EDIT. How is the financial aid at art schools for transfers?

I don’t think art schools are known for their good financial aid for freshmen, let alone transfers.

Why not major in art or a closely related field and apply for a MFA or what not?

babyfudge,

There is a whole sub-forum dedicated to Art School admissions. You should go take a look at it. Click on “Discussion Home” in the upper-left of this screen, and then scroll down to find it under the College Majors Forum.

In 2007 my D was a successful transfer from an LAC to Parsons. She did however have a serious background in art beforehand, which made putting together a portfolio easier. In addition she was awarded amazing scholarships from the school (she entered as a sophomore), which I understand is quite rare.

I guess what I’m saying is that it can be done, I have seen it with my own eyes. She is much happier at Parsons, pursuing her passion.
