Transferring from a UC to another UC

For inter-UC transfer, will taking upper-division courses at home UC negatively affect the admission chance?

This is from UCLA specifically: Please note, for transfer applicants coming from a UC campus specifically, no more than 24 of these units may be from upper-division coursework. Students transferring from another UC campus will be at risk of being denied admission if they exceed the total 129 units limitation OR exceed the 24 unit upper-division coursework limitation.

Other UC’s may have different limitations so you need to check each individual campus.

Below are the UC unit maximums:
Berkeley: 90 semester/135 quarter units or more
Accepts some High Unit Juniors and Seniors

Davis: 80 semester/120 quarter units or more; Dean’s Review required
Accepts some High Unit Juniors and Seniors

Irvine: 90 semester/135 quarter units or more
Accepts some High Unit Juniors and Seniors

Los Angeles: 86.5 semester/130 quarter units or more
Accepts NO High Unit Juniors or Seniors

Merced: 80 semester/120 quarter units or more; Dean’s Review required
Accepts some High Unit Juniors and Seniors

Riverside: 90 semester/135 quarter units or more; Dean’s Review required

San Diego: 90 semester/135 quarter units or more

Santa Barbara: 90 semester/135 quarter units or more
*College of Creative Studies will consider seniors on a case-by-case basis

Thank you, this is really helpful! I have 20 AP units at current UC. Do those AP credits count toward the UC unit maximum?

According to another discussion in the UC Transfer forum, no AP credits do not count towards the UC unit maximum.

Check out this discussion especially the last few posts: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/2188839-unit-cap-if-only-taking-undergraduate-level-classes-at-a-4-year.html

When Transferring UC-UC, all units are counted and there is no 70 unit lower division cap. AP is excluded from the count.

Hi! Can someone explain this statement that was on the FAQs for UCLA?

“UC courses and upper division courses from 4-year institutions will not be capped (at 70 semester/105 quarter units). Those units can put you at risk of exceeding the maximum for transfer eligibility and becoming senior-level.”

Example:
Lower division courses: 75 (capped at 70)
Upper division courses from a random 4-year: 10
UC courses (upper and lower): 10

This equals 90 units.
