i'm currently a student at the community college of philadelphia. i transferred from delaware community college this fall and will technically be completing my freshman year by the end of spring semester. i am listed on the honor roll, have around a 4.0 gpa, and am in ccp's french club. my long-term goal is to become an anthropologist (specifically dealing with asian culture) and it is extremely important to attend a college that has a strong program in this field. the top anthropology programs include:

uc berkeley
u michigan
harvard
chicago
upenn

my top choice is upenn, but understand that this is the top choice for many, more qualified students.

i am contemplating continuing at ccp (i really am in no rush...i would rather take my time and work hard to get what i want), perhaps completing my associates degree before applying, and studying abroad in spring of 2011 in nepal & tibet. so my question is this: do i have a chance? would getting my associates degree be of any help?

Penn looks especially favorably on local applicants, in either an explicit or implicit social contract with the city of Philadelphia. It’s definitely worth applying as a transfer to Penn.

^ Agreed with ilovebagels statement. I did a summer program at Penn for underprivileged Philly high school students, and they spent 3 hours once talking about college prep. The people at the program (current students, staff from admissions office, staff from other departments at Penn, and more) stressed repeatedly to us that they look very favorably on qualified CCP applicants who want to transfer to Penn.

So if you really are interested in attending Penn, apply there. You have a good GPA too, which further increases your chances.

Yah I agree with all of the above. Along with the preference for city of Phila students, I think showing a good, compelling story would help a lot in your application. You’ve obviously done quite well recently, so if you can tell a story that correlates and substantiates the reason for this great performance of late, I think you’ll have a strong app. Good luck!

thank you so much for the responses! i am glad to hear the upenn looks favorably upon ccp students…i was very curious to know if it made a difference. right now, my plan is to apply for fall 2011, but am wondering if perhaps it would be wise for me to complete my associates degree at ccp first. ccp offers a liberal arts honors program which may increase my chances. any opinions on that? also, does anyone know if upenn will still require my high school resume and sat scores?

A. To apply as a transfer student Penn requires:

Application forms located at The Common Application website, or at The Universal College Application website along with the University of Pennsylvania Application Supplement.

The Application includes two required essays and lists of your extra-curricular activities in both high school and college. The Application also includes the College Official’s Report demonstrating the student is in good academic and disciplinary standing at their current school.

The Penn Application Supplement includes the Form 4, the Mid-Term Grade Report for Transfer Students, which indicates current courses being taken during the Spring semester.

The SAT Reasoning Test. The ACT Test with Writing is also acceptable.

An official copy of your current college and all previous college transcripts.

An official copy of your high school transcript.

Two recommendations from current college professors.

Q. Is standardized testing required for all transfer applicants?

A. Yes, we require the SAT Reasoning Test and or the ACT Test with Writing for all transfer applicants. "
