Hey guys, i was wondering if I don't like the college (dorming) , and I want to leave after 1st semester, is it possible to transfer after the 1st semester? (from sept-> january)

i'm pretty sure i'm attending BU and I want to see if i'll like it there, and if not, is it possible for me to leave right after 1st semester to go to Baruch (a public CUNY in new york)
?

thx

College students who transfer typically do so after their second, third, or fourth semester.

woah there are 4 semesters in one year? or do you mean 2nd semester (end of freshmen year) ?

is it possible to transfer out first semester lol

College students who transfer usually do so after the second year, which is after the third or fourth semester. If you leave after one year, you might run into trouble. Anyway, it's a good idea to give it a year to work out all of the transitional concerns and issues. So, you would not begin the transfer process until you were in your second year. It takes as long as it did to apply to college for the first time. You need to apply to various schools, if you really want to leave your original school, get rec letters, essays, transcripts, maybe info from HS. You can't just up and leave, unless you are taking a leave of absence and then do the transfer process while you are away from school.

It's more common for people to transfer after their first year than you think. Check the transfer policy of the school you want to go to and see if they give preferential treatment to applications of incoming sophomores vs incoming juniors. None of the schools I applied to had such a policy. In fact, I'm transferring after my freshman year and I've gotten into some top 40 LACs from an unranked school.

It also depends on how unhappy you are. I chose to transfer out while I was still moderately sane and had a 4.0. If I'd had to stay here another year, I would have been so depressed and unhappy that it would have been very difficult to maintain my grades and extracurriculars at the level I have this year. If you're so miserable that you can't function, don't let the stereotype of "transfer after your sophomore year" hold you back.

I think it's even possible for you to go to Baruch after a semester -- I'm assuming it's less competitive admissions-wise than BU, but I don't know a lot about the CUNYs. Good for you for planning ahead, but try to enjoy where you're headed now first. Good luck. :)
