Transferring from Community College to an ABET Certified 4-Year

I’m currently enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering transfer program from my local CC (Diablo Valley College, Pleasant Hill) and I am concerned about transferring from a non-ABET certified program into a 4-year that does have ABET accreditation.

When the time comes I want to transfer to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, but I am concerned about my classes being carried over and if so whether or not it would affect my status as an engineer should I graduate from Cal Poly.

If anyone has had a similar experience or any relevant knowledge regarding transferring from a non-ABET certified CC to a 4-year University I would appreciate your advice on my next course of action.

Thank you,

Look on http://www.assist.org to see what courses transfer as what subject credit.

There aren’t any two year ABET accredited programs in CA. All that matters is that your BS is accredited.

As for Poly, the transfer algorithm is pretty straightforward. It’s a combination of GPA and a rigor score based on the number of desired courses you take (all the required are…required  ) and then a bit for ECs and work experience. The higher your GPA and the more desired courses you’ve taken, the more competitive you’ll be. I’m assuming that the ECs and work are similar to the first time freshmen algorithm. If so, and EC leadership roll will give an extra bump as will work related to your chosen major.

CP is very transparent on their projections. For the upcoming admission cycle they expect 618 transfer applicants for 30 slots. They don’t release the yield statistics by major, but if you assume 50% for ME transfers, roughly 10% will be accepted.

Make sure your chosen courses articulate as @ucbalumnus suggested. If your school doesn’t have a particular class, sometimes they’ll accept a class deemed equivalent. Check in advance.

Lastly, the Poly admissions staff is very friendly and helpful. Call if you’re unsure about anything.

Good luck.

@ucbalumnus Thank you for sharing the link, it’s a very useful tool to have. Wish I had known about it earlier, but at least now I know about it.

@eyemgh Wow that’s a relief, I was beginning to think that if I didn’t start out in an ABET accredited program it would have all been for nothing once I had transferred into one.

Now, as for EC I heavily volunteered with a few organizations in the past, but the most recent record was over a year ago. Would CP be looking for more recent and ongoing ECs?

Thank you all for the help,
